  • Mike Loyd impact

Over the last seven games of last season, Loyd averaged 25 minutes and 12.3 points per game. Some of those games were when Jimmer had reduced minutes, but the obvious impact game when Jimmer played full minutes was the 35 minutes and 26 points in the Florida game.

Loyd's emergence stole minutes from Emery, Haws, and JT. He opened the game up for Jimmer. He was our best perimeter defender, I include Charles in that comparison. He was our fastest guy in the transition game.

It may not seem like much of a loss because he wasn't really discovered until the last 1/4 of the season. But if you compare how this team could have done with him vs how we will do without him, it's very significant.

Not to be downer here, but I saw a comment like "we won't miss Loyd that much". And I've seen those kinds of comments a lot on CB. And I could not disagree more.

No doubt Loyd was huge. He struck me as a career benchwarmer his freshman year, but he sure developed. He wouldn't have started this year, so I still don't think his loss is disastrous, but no question he would have been a huge asset. Well, with all the questions at 3-5 I suppose it's possible he could have started along with Jim and Jax, but it seems pretty unlikely.

I must be reading CB at different times than you because almost all I see is posts about how much Loyd is going to be missed. I guess you might be referencing something of mine when talking about posts saying Loyd won't be missed much.

I wouldn't put Loyd anywhere near "best perimeter defender" title, and it isn't as if BYU had a handful of lockdown guys last year. But Emery and Abouo were easily superior defenders, IMO. Far more consistent, better technique, and better understanding of the team defensive strategy.

I do think Loyd as a junior, if he would have been able to stay focused and work hard (not his strong suit during his time at BYU) would have helped BYU a lot. But saying that is quite a bit different than saying he was a huge loss based on his contribution to the team last year.

Loyd always guarded the other team's best offensive perimeter player when he was in. The priority level went Loyd > Abouo > Jax. Jax is a killer with his active hands and jumping on lazy/errant passes. He's slow laterally and can't stay with a quick penetrator.

Apparently, Coach Rose disagrees. Personally, I think we need another ball handler and to avoid Jimmer dribbling too much. Run a fast break. That's what Loyd provided. But he may have provided that in spite of the coaching. If that's the case, he will really be missed.

I haven't pulled up any video yet, but I'm going to have to go with a big fat "you're crazy" on this one.

And I couldn't agree more with you. I think we will all be surprised how much Loyd will be missed. He had a chance to be a top 10 guard of all-time at BYU - perhaps even top 5.

Based on how Loyd played as a sophomore, especially at the end of the season when he started getting major opportunities, factor in improvement in his junior and senior seasons, name 10 BYU guards who were clearly better than what he could have been.

Obviously this is something we will never know now, but I honestly think he had a chance to become one of the ten best.

Well, I definitely think he had a chance, because BYU has not had 10 great guards in their history (I am counting guys like Bigelow, Cummard, and Toolson as forwards). The only guards who he really had no chance of surpassing are Ainge, Fredette, and probably Marty Haws and Nemelka (I don't know much about Nemelka).

Having said that, he really would have needed to pick things up. There is no doubt that Loyd had a couple of great games, but in the entire season he only had 6 double digit scoring games. A lot of that was due to the minutes he played, but he scoring per minute was not great either, just 6th on the team. He would have had more chances over the next couple of years, but he also would have received a lot more defensive focus.

If he is a guy who would have turned into a top 10 BYU guard, then we should expect him to dominate against Div II competition this year. I would not be surprised to see him do that, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him be just another guy down there as well.

My feeling is that we will miss him, but I don't think it is unreasonable to believe that we will make him up in other ways.

I am trying to figure out where to place Austin Ainge.

Yes. All things considered, Rose decided Loyd was a net detriment to the team so he kicked him off.

Loyd wasn't close to approaching Lyday status. But Lyday was really good.

The thing we don't know about Loyd is if he could have been a consistent performer or not -- especially after teams started gameplanning for him. He shone brilliantly for 4 or 5 games out of his 3 year career. I'm grateful for his invaluable help in winning a couple of games last year (especially Florida), but I'm not willing to uncategorically claim that his departure is a huge loss.
