What do Mormons think these kids are going to say? We kick them out and they only have positive things to say about us? Of course he didn't get kicked out for not getting baptised. He's taking a little shot back at us for trying to fix him when he didn't feel like he needed to be fixed.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI by the way am not arguing he shouldn't have been booted. However, the hand wringing over the kid saying he couldn't deal with the "mormon thing" I find amuzing.
I can understand some hating on BYU fans and members for not loving the "mormon (BYU) thing". However, to go off on a non-member, AA, 19-21 year old saying he doesn't love is, like I said, amuzing.
It is like me leaving the RFLDS and saying, I just didn't get the RFLDS thing. Heck, I would be praised on CB.

He obviously did not have as big of a problem with BYU as he claims since he hung around all summer after getting booted and went to Dave Rose several times begging to be let back in school.Originally posted by jay santos View PostWhat do Mormons think these kids are going to say? Jake Smith is a stud. That dude gets all the ladies.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostI'm not following the comparison to Jake Smith. If Jake Smith played basketball at BYU and chose not to follow his coach's/school's requirements as often as Loyd did, he wouldn't be at BYU any more either. And if Mike Loyd were just your typical undergrad student (albeit black and non-LDS), and nobody was aware of what honor code violations he might have been committing, he too would still be in school and pursuing his degree.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Right. The angst comes when he's forced to move on and he's playing at some crappy DII school with no pub and no pro scouts at any of the games.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostHe obviously did not have as big of a problem with BYU as he claims since he hung around all summer after getting booted and went to Dave Rose several times begging to be let back in school.

If you think BYU is to blame for the Loyd situation, then it simply means you don't know what you're talking about.Originally posted by jay santos View PostIf you're serious, this is standard party line bullshit. It's much easier to blame others, than to think about if we have any culpability.

Well he wasn't kicked out of BYU. This was not an Unga situation where he was kinda sorta forced to withdraw. The school stated that he was not in trouble with the HC office and he was not in trouble due to academics.
It's not very complex. The coach kicked him off the basketball team. We haven't been given the reasons, but it is pretty clear that it had to do with breaking team rules.

I have seen what coach Rose does to develop guards. If I'm a guard at BYU, I do whatever the hell the guy tells me to do and do whatever is necessary to stay on the team.Originally posted by Commando View PostIf you can't get coach Rose to like you, that's just embarrassing. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Mike's situation is very different than the normal situation. He got caught up with his self identified "rebel" image. The result of that image was that he didn't do things required of all players in all programs. That's it. That said, I don't doubt that he is uncomfortable with the LDS culture that tries to assimilate all BYU students. That push to assimilate may have driven his need to show that he would not assimilate. Maybe he stopped acting like a player should because of the LDS culture's pressure and his desire to reject it. Regardless, I don't read the story as referring to refusal to convert religions. I also don't think this was a BYU problem. I think this was a Mike Loyd problem. I only wish Rose had been able to keep him on the team without undermining himself or his other coaches.

I knew he could eventually be in trouble when he was first introduced at a FB game along with the other BB players. I was happy to see the number of AA kids on the team, but worried when the AA kids starting jiving and dancing on the field. I could tell Lloyd was leading them in the moves and therefor right then worried about him.
It is the same worry I have for O'Neil. If you see those guys acting like the black athletes at other schools, you just have to worry that they aren't buying into the BYU and mormon thing and trouble could be down the road.
