    Michael Lloyd on BYU

Wow-- I didn't know we gave him the ultimatum to join the Church or bounce.

We do that a lot to star non-LDS athletes.

I'm not sure it was join the church or leave. I'm guessing this is the quote you are referring to:

They had a problem with me not being LDS (Latter Day Saints), but I couldn’t get my mind around their concepts,”
Concepts could be taken to mean things that a student is expected to obey once they sign the honor code, LDS or not.

I wonder if Rose was laying down some heavy concepts about stop getting arrested. That's some Stephen Hawking s#it right there.

My first comment was sarcastic obviously. But I don't think the CB reaction of piling on the BYU-offender is the right approach here. It's easy to blame Mike Loyd because he was arrested with drugs on his possession. But there's obviously something wrong with the system when we can't retain what 25%? of the freshman black non-LDS FB and BB players that come here.

I think we should allow gang bangs. That would bring that percentage to about 10%.

If you're serious, this is standard party line bullshit. It's much easier to blame others, than to think about if we have any culpability.

I don't think he is referring to joining the Church as much as referring to the LDS lifestyle and view of the world. Frankly, I'm not surprised that he couldn't get his mind around our concepts. It is hard to imagine a young man understanding why sex and alcohol are forbidden when they are neither harmful nor illegal.

For those referring to his legal troubles, we all know he didn't leave because of his legal troubles. Minor stuff anyway. I got in worse legal trouble in college while at BYU without ramification.

I blame the girls and their parents as well.

But Loyd's situation is a bad one to use in this type of discussion. If anything, BYU showed a fair amount of undue favoritism toward Loyd. He got breaks that some players in the past haven't. Given the chances Rose extended him, it really is a joke that he couldn't do enough to stay at the school.

Discussions on improvements BYU can make in order to be more accepting of and responsive to the needs of athletes that come from such divergent cultures would certainly have merit. They just don't really apply in Loyd's case.

If for what he did, he would have been kicked out of even 25% of other Universities out there, his comment I would consider a cheap shot.

If not, then he is stating fact if he says he couldn't get into the "mormon thing". Well let me revise that and say he should have said, I couldn't get into the "BYU thing", but Mike probably doesn't realize there is a difference.

Like someone on CB mentioned, he couldn't handle our "high standards". Message, if you can't last at BYU you are of lesser character than those that can. Well, that is if everyone accepts "your" standards are higher.

Can't it be possible that well meaning, intelligent people might think the "standards" are different, not necessarily higher. I am tired of hearing the "our higher standards" stuff. No wonder people root for BYU to fall flat on their face.

Well we don't know the full story. And likewise you don't know the full story of white LDS kid from Pocatello Jake Smith in the BYU 132nd ward. You could probably dig something up on him if you looked hard enough.

I think every case you can break down and find some blame for the kid. That seems to be what we do every time it comes up.

If the university can't even explain why he had to leave and six months later everyone remains confused, I would bet he wouldn't be kicked out of 25% of universities for it.

I'm not following the comparison to Jake Smith. If Jake Smith played basketball at BYU and chose not to follow his coach's/school's requirements as often as Loyd did, he wouldn't be at BYU any more either. And if Mike Loyd were just your typical undergrad student (albeit black and non-LDS), and nobody was aware of what honor code violations he might have been committing, he too would still be in school and pursuing his degree.

I by the way am not arguing he shouldn't have been booted. However, the hand wringing over the kid saying he couldn't deal with the "mormon thing" I find amuzing.

I can understand some hating on BYU fans and members for not loving the "mormon (BYU) thing". However, to go off on a non-member, AA, 19-21 year old saying he doesn't love is, like I said, amuzing.

It is like me leaving the RFLDS and saying, I just didn't get the RFLDS thing. Heck, I would be praised on CB.
