And that worked out nicely for BYU. Mika totally flew under the radar with that missed season.

Is he from the Andrus family that went to Timpview and had two of the boys play D-1 ball (one at BYU and the other at Hawaii)? If so, I think one of his cousins is on the football team.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostByu has offered 6'10 center Ryan Andrus from American Fork. He will be a senior this season.
I have seen him play a few times I thought he was intriguing prospect but never thought Rose would offer. He averaged 19 and 7 and feasted on smaller teams. However his two games against Lone Peak and Mika he was held to 7 and 9 points both season lows.

Interesting. I'm not intimately familiar with the rules. I was referring to someone who moved into the boundaries. I'm assuming such person would not need to prove any non-basketball reason for the transfer. If there is a sit-out-one-year rule for private-public transfers, that seems like a lame rule.

Rose does a good job of offering lots of guys who could fit his system then cutting out the guys who don't develop into Dave Rose type players (usually a lack of effort or injury thing). I really think he is one of the best coaches in college hoops. He has some weaknesses as a coach but his total package is pretty impressive.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostDave Rose not only offered Ryan Andrus yesterday from American Fork, But he also offered sophomore Frank Jackson (formerly of Lehi) now of Lone Peak as well as junior Zach Seljaas a 6'7 wing from Bountiful.
Rose is not messing around.

What is he doing to increase the athleticism of the team? We don't do well in the tournament mainly due to lack of ability on the defensive end and a lack of ability to create our own shots.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostDave Rose not only offered Ryan Andrus yesterday from American Fork, But he also offered sophomore Frank Jackson (formerly of Lehi) now of Lone Peak as well as junior Zach Seljaas a 6'7 wing from Bountiful.

Andrus is a bit of a head scratcher. Seljaas is a major head scratcher. Seljaas is not a wing. He's a post who by the way he runs and jumps appears to be wearing 20 lb shoes.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostDave Rose not only offered Ryan Andrus yesterday from American Fork, But he also offered sophomore Frank Jackson (formerly of Lehi) now of Lone Peak as well as junior Zach Seljaas a 6'7 wing from Bountiful.

I don't think our woes in the tourney stem from the offensive side of the ball.Originally posted by Topper View PostWhat is he doing to increase the athleticism of the team? From what I can tell he hasn't done too poorly. He has won 3 tourney games in his tenure and of his losses the only ones I thought BYU was just outclassed was aTm the 2nd campaign and the loss to Marquette - many of the others were essentially toss ups. I think to answer your question about how he attempts to mitigate BYU's lack of athleticism the answer is his efforts to push the ball. To make it work he needs to have at least one big capable of getting up and down the court and having perimeter players capable to shoot the 3. I think the area where a lack of athleticism is most exploited in the college game is giving up offensive rebounds. By forcing teams to take BYU's transition game serious and gameplan for it this does cover that weakness to some extent.
The other idea is he could recruit better athletes but the reality is this..BYU is limited to its recruiting base and while you, I and others might long for the base to become UNC's base that is just kind of not going to happen. Look at what happened this year for example. Rose worked really hard on Sai Tummalla. Here is a kid that fits BYU in every way except he isn't LDS. He is a future oriented kid who is socially conservative. Culturally he fits the BYU demographic. From a style perspective he was designed to play in Rose's system. There were no LDS alternatives to fill the need that Sai could do so BYU worked like mad to land the kid and until ASU offered it looked like they had. Instead of casting a big net Rose focussed his limited, albeit not small, resources on that kid and in the end lost out. From a strategic perspective how can anyone blame Dave or the approach he took? However, when the dust settles these types of recruiting losses are what limits BYU's potential as a basketball program. Even with the great success Dave has brought BYU and even with Sai likely knowing that while he wouldn't be a star at BYU he would likely be a key contributor that helped BYU to get from a good team to a team that could potentially make a national level run...it wasn't to be. I think that at the end of the day the answer to your question is nobody but God can really fix the issue you identified and that from all reasonable accounts Dave Rose is dealing with it better and mitigating it more than any other BYU coach in your lifetime.

He does these head scratchers but he also moves them along once it becomes obvious. I give him the benefit of the doubt but like you I sometimes wonder.Originally posted by jay santos View PostAndrus is a bit of a head scratcher. Seljaas is a major head scratcher. I appreciate Rose and don't want any change in the head coach. If by some miracle, Rose could get the right combination of unidentified athleticism with some timely rebounding and outside shooting, we could have some enjoyable time near the top again.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI don't think our woes in the tourney stem from the offensive side of the ball.

There are times, such as last year, where the lack of overall athleticism and consistency in shooting the three, that the team was hard to watch. When BYU plays poorly, there is nothing much to watch. In other teams, you might have a team play poorly, but you have some amazing athletes to watch.
Jimmer's senior season will forever haunt me. We were Brandon away from the promised land of the Final Four. I fear my life may not see BYU reach that hallowed spot."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Good points, especially about the team being difficult to watch when not playing well. That said, Haws was fairly watchable at all times last year. Jimmer was very watchable. I still remember waking up to go to the airport on the way to China with the family and reading about Brandon. I still get that sinking gutted feeling in my stomach when I think about it.Originally posted by Topper View PostI appreciate Rose and don't want any change in the head coach. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It was awful. BYU was headed toward a number one seed, and really would have made it to the Final Four that year. The stars may not align while you and I tarry upon the earth. How can a school like Bradley make it to the Final Four but never BYU? Oh the cruelty of reality.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostGood points, especially about the team being difficult to watch when not playing well. This is the cruelty of life; Utah, with no real success of late, can outrecruit BYU for players that could take BYU to the next level. Drop Sunday play, or be more passive on HC enforcement. It is the only way. Yes, I know it will never happen, but while I'm dreaming of BYU success, I might as well fashion a path to get there.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostBrekkott Chapman said right now Utah is the team to beat for his services.
