I just watched the lone peak vs Mitty game. Man, those lp guys are fun to watch. Emery and hawes are the real deal and Mika is better than I expected. The announcers were fauning over Aaron Gordon the whole game but Mika is a better all around player than Gordon IMO. Gordon will fill a highlight reel much like Blake griffin does, but I'm not sure he has much of a game at all below the rim. Mika made him look silly a couple of times on defense with a simple head fake and up and under.

I wouldn't say Mika is better than Gordon. There are things that Mika can't do that Gordon does. Gordon is more athletic and can put the ball on the floor and face guys up. Mika doesn't have that. But I do think Mika rebounds the ball better and has a better game with his back to the hoop.Originally posted by bluegoose View PostI just watched the lone peak vs Mitty game. But I do agree that the Gordon leg-humping was obnoxious. Especially when LP completely dominated his team at both ends of the floor. Sure Gordon got his, but his usage rate was probably 50% for the game as Mitty was looking for him every possession. LP is as good a basketball team I have watched all year. They play at a pace most HS kids aren't conditioned for. You could see that Mitty was exhausted. Gordon was sucking wind before they finally pulled him out. Watching Mika be able to run the floor the entire game got me really excited. Emery is going to be a good one. I like that he's leaving in May to have a full summer with the team when he gets back. The kid I am most looking forward to though is Haws. I really like his game. He gets a little loose with his handle at times and defers to his behind the back and through the leg crossover to the point of predictability, but he can get his shot off anywhere. Even when he seems off balance, he manages to square up. His release is very quick. I think he'll be even better than Tyler when both are finished at BYU.
My favorite part of the broadcast though was when they called LP BYU's JV. There isn't another public school in the country that can hang with them."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I guess I did overstate things a little in my last post. Gordon is a good player and will make whatever college team he goes to a better team. I just think he is overrated as a complete player. All but a couple of his baskets yesterday were put backs or alley oops. He did very little to create his own offense. Jabari looked very good yesterday. At #2 nationally, he appears to be light years ahead of Gordon at #7 in terms of being a well rounded player.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI wouldn't say Mika is better than Gordon. This was the first time that I was able to see Mika play and I was really impressed with his skill set. Great with his back to the basket and could run the floor like no other HS big man that I've seen. Defense was also rock solid. I think he is highly undervalued at #67 nationally. BYU definitely making away like bandits with him.
They said that Mika won the dunk contest at this tournament. I think he also won the Palms Tourney dunk contest. I can't tell you how excited this makes me. As someone who witnessed 1-25 in Provo, I'm not sure that we had a single dunk at the Marriott center that entire season. Knowing that we now get one of the most athletic big men in the country makes me warm and fuzzy all over.

What's up with Emery and his long sleeves? Does he do that every game?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Great summary. The Gordon leg humping was off the charts. My wife wanted to throw something at the TV at one point. He is a great player but his team was getting spanked by 40 points. Give some credit to the public school kids pummeling the two-time defending Cali state champs from a private school.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI wouldn't say Mika is better than Gordon. From ESPN's recap of the Hoophall Classic:
Biggest Green Light
Nick Emery (Highland, Utah/Lone Peak)
2013, G, 6-2, 180
Status: Signed with BYU
The southpaw sniper is listed as a point guard in our database, but he was doing anything but thinking about his teammates in Monday’s game. This guy is a flamethrower, and he only needs half a second of daylight to launch. He has that ultra confidence all great shot makers possess, which allows him to hit shots off his back foot or fading away. With just a little better shot selection, Emery will be the closest thing to Jimmer Fredette BYU has seen since the real thing.
Best Blue-Collar Big Man
Eric Mika (Highland, Utah/Lone Peak)
2013, C, 6-9, 220
Status: Signed with BYU
Mika is all substance with no interest in style. He’s well built with a solid frame, runs the floor hard and is an absolute warrior on the glass. In the midst of Aaron Gordon’s dominance, what was lost on most was the fact that Mika actually outrebounded him. Mika’s energy and intensity are constants, regardless of the fact that he isn’t always rewarded with the appropriate level of touches on the offensive end. Moreover, he’s an excellent passer from the low post, and the perfect anchor to Lone Peak’s lethal 3-point shooting.
Unsung Hero
Connor Toolson (Highland, Utah/Lone Peak)
2013, SG, 6-2, 165
Status: No Division I offers
It wasn’t Emery, Mika or BYU-bound junior T.J. Haws who took MVP honors for Lone Peak against Archbishop Mitty -- it was unsigned senior Connor Toolson. In a market where an endless number of schools are scrambling to find shooters, it’s incredible that Toolson has no Division I offers to his name. He’s a knockdown shooter, has a high basketball IQ and is adept at knowing his role and picking his spots. Lone Peak runs as advanced an offense as you’ll see, so Toolson is uniquely prepared to fit in at the next level."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

No idea. He's tiny. Really tiny. But he's a good player with bloodlines. You'd think the kid would have some D1 offer. We missed on cousin Ryan.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostWhat are the chances Connor Toolsen will walk on at BYU?"Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
