I'd tell my son to play for BYU!!!!!Originally posted by jay santos View PostThey have 17 year old sons with NPV of $20M+ and are in over their heads in a world where everyone's making a grab for that value. How would you act as a dad in that role?Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I would think he is thinking about all the possibilities that could derail him from reaching the big time. The possible violation of the HC is probably a minor one. However, BYU having it I don't think is a game changer in BYU's favor. Some might. Do you?Originally posted by BlueK View PostWow, you really think this is about Frank's dad worried his son might encounter a situation with the honor code?
I don't know the Jackson's so can't say. I do know a family whose kid had an offer to BYU and other schools. Mom wants the kid at BYU because of the HC, dad looks at things more realistically.

I would be very happy if my kid grew up and automatically lived honor code standards. However, if he was as talented as Jackson, I would fear him going to BYU slipping up and going through crap like Davies and Unga had to.
Opporunities are better elsewhere without the potential downside.
I dunno. I bet Jimmer's dad would have won an election or two in Utah circa '10, though.

71 has a little bit of an obsession about the HC. He is a bit like liberal pundits who on very rare occasions like to talk about racism when a criticism of President Obama is mentioned.Originally posted by BlueK View PostWow, you really think this is about Frank's dad worried his son might encounter a situation with the honor code?Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

You are right. I need to let it go. Who cares if people think BYU is the face of the church, when it is the face of the churches far right.
I won't mention the honor code again.

True, I think they're still shocked by the attention and how fast everything developed. Brandon Gurney did a nice interview with the family and article just as the attention from Duke and other started to heat up. I also heard Gurney interviewed on the radio about it after he wrote it. From what I read and heard, it sounds like what happened is that his parents had no idea how good he was. They were humbled and grateful when Dave Rose extended an unusually early scholarship offer, but that still didn't tip them off. Then Frank started going to some national camps and realized he was just as good or better than kids there who were getting recruited by very big name programs like UNC and Duke, so they opened the recruitment process back up. The Gurney article mentioned all of this but also said that while he was there doing the interview that Frank got a text from Coach K and he and his parents were still in awe of getting that attention at that point, even after decommitting to BYU.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThey have 17 year old sons with NPV of $20M+ and are in over their heads in a world where everyone's making a grab for that value. Now a few tweets later from his dad, including "liking" a tweet from a supposed ute fan saying that BYU isn't "worthy" of FJ, I wonder if perhaps he or his parents kind of feel like BYU's early offer was a bad thing, like they were trying to lock him up before others found out how good he was. The thing is, BYU did what they had to do, and credit to Rose for spotting talent when he saw it. It's not looking like we'll get him, but it sure wouldn't be any different had they taken their time extending an offer.

They were perfectly happy with BYU when the offer was extended. Otherwise they don't jump on it on the spot.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI would think he is thinking about all the possibilities that could derail him from reaching the big time. Now they get the full court press from some schools they didn't think would be interested. And I could be totally wrong, but reading between the lines of dad's tweets, I tend to sense an undercurrent of almost being annoyed/upset at BYU for trying to lock him up before the others noticed him. Maybe not, but that would indicate being a little naive about how the business works, which certainly seems consistent with other things they've said.Last edited by BlueK; 07-14-2015, 11:11 AM.

Generally speaking: reacting at the "immaturity" or "selfishness" or "dishonesty" or whatever else of an 18 yo kid because they spurned your school is one of the grossest aspects of college sports fans. I admit I use to do it. I'm much more mature now. Actually, probably the only reason is that I (sadly) don't give an eff as much as I used to, so it's easy not to do it.

My comments aren't based on anything Frank has done or said. He hasn't even remotely said or done anything that seems like any of the things recruits might be accused of. My opinions are forming around his dad's tweets, which he chose to put out there. In every interview Frank has been 100% class.Originally posted by jay santos View PostGenerally speaking: reacting at the "immaturity" or "selfishness" or "dishonesty" or whatever else of an 18 yo kid because they spurned your school is one of the grossest aspects of college sports fans. Why is it sad that you don't care as much as you once did? It is probably more healthy this way and you are still free to get all caught up in a year that is worth being caught up in. In fact I think as we mature part of the turnoff about college sports is the fans.Originally posted by jay santos View PostGenerally speaking: reacting at the "immaturity" or "selfishness" or "dishonesty" or whatever else of an 18 yo kid because they spurned your school is one of the grossest aspects of college sports fans. I long believe I have never had a problem with kids who choose not to go to BYU. My only comment on Frank Jackson is thinking about the whole mission experience and what a sacrifice, a real one, it would be for him. For chumps like 71, Jeff Lebowski, you and I serving a mission was not a real huge sacrifice but for Frank it is kind of a big deal.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!
