  • Recruiting 25-26/Roster for 26-27

BYU just got a commitment from KJ Perry purportedly the top JUCO recruit in the nation:

    https://www.deseret.com/sports/2025/...yu-basketball/

KJ is coming in for KY in January. He is not playing his SO year in eligibility at JUCO and will redshirt this season. He will be with the team starting January and will be SO in eligibility starting next year.

This is on top of BYU getting commitments from Dean Rueckert and Will Openshaw both of Timpview. Here is Reukert's link: https://247sports.com/Player/dean-rueckert-46142861/. I don't think Openshaw has done much of selling himself/building recruiting profiles. Interesting that in the 3rd year of KY's recruiting he lands two LDS kids from Timpview. Openshaw is a sign and send on a mission player while Rueckert does not plan to serve a mission.

Additionally, Chamberlin Burgess https://247sports.com/Player/chamber...gess-46151483/ did not serve a mission, or did not stay very long, and will play this year at Snow College but I understand is planning to enroll at BYU this summer and play for the Cougars starting next season.

BYU is still recruiting but things seem to be quiet. I understand they are really actively pursuing Autin Goosby and Anthony Falesi. I have no clue how likely they are to land both but Goosby is a 5 star kid and LDS so I would almost expect BYU to be in a really good position. Falesi is a 4 star kid and while originally from Utah County I have no clue is if he is LDS or not.

So while roster talk for next season is way premature BYU has the following underclass athletes who could return to be on the 26-27 roster:

    Rob Wright
    Tyler Mrus
    Brody Kozlowski
    Aleksej Kostic
    Khadim Mboup
    Dominque Diomande
    Kennard Davis
    Xavion Staton

Add to this those we understand recruited to play at BYU and whose eligibility will start next year:
Brooks Bahr -returning from a mission and part of the 2024 Recruiting class
Chamberlin Burgess - JC transfer from Snow and part of the 2025 Recruiting class
Dean Rueckert- Part of the 2026 Recruiting Class
KJ Perry- JC transfer and part of the 2026 Recruiting Class

I think BYU will sign both Goosby and Falesi and that will likely complete the HS recruiting portion of roster development for next year. When the dust settles I expect at least 1-2 of those on the current roster to transfer out and I think BYU will pick up 1-2 from the portal- and I expect them to be bigs. But that bridge will be crossed next April and May.

So my way-way-way to premature roster for 26-27 is:

    1.) Wright, Perry, Bahr
    2.) Davis, Kostic, Falesi
    3.) Goosby, Diomande, Mrus, Rueckert
    4.) Mboup, Kozlowski, Burgess
5.) Staton, Transfer portal, Transfer portal

I have no clue who to project will be gone but I wonder if Bahr and Kostic are similar players and whether BYU will want both long term. I also wonder about having 3 4's all on the roster who are SO in eligibility so Burgess not coming to BYU or some other 4 transferring out if this year doesn't go as they expect would not surprise me. But for a thread to follow the roster development for next year this is a good place to start!

Thanks for the rundown. I don't have the energy to keep up with recruiting, so these type of summaries are great.

I have no idea if Xavion Stanton will have a prolific career at BYU, but I saw him on Friday, and dude was clearly living his best life. I recognized him as I walked by him under the east stands at LES. He was surrounded by several elect daughters of God. I pointed at him and he pointed back. So, whether or not he'll ever be a 20/10 guy at BYU, I believe in my heart that he is cool as shit.

Hoping those elect daughters keep enough distance to keep him eligible as long as he wants to be.

BYU just landed Abdullah Ahmed, a big man who is in his second year with the G League. No idea how good he is, but he's apparently a strong rim defender and chose BYU over Houston so that's an indicator.

In 18 mpg he averages 4.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 3 bpg in the G league. I would imagine that in college if he plays 28 mpg he will average about 8/9/5. I expect he starts at the 5 next season.

Falesi is headed to Pitt. BYU is still in the running for Goosby. I tend to think BYU would be great for him-he may be good enough to start as a freshman at BYU. The things I have read is that next year's FR class is underwhelming -which might explain why it had so many Utah roots/connections and LDS kids rated so highly so maybe being a top 30 player in this class isn't good enough to start next year for BYU. In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king! Regardless, here are the players I understand are currently scheduled to be on BYU's roster next season:

            Kennard Davis-SR
            Tyler Mrus-SR
Nate Pickens - SR (taking a medical redshirt this season and plans to play at BYU next year)
            Robert Wright-JR
            Abdullah Ahmed- JR
            KJ Perry-SO
            Dominique Diomande- SO
            Aleksej Kostic- SO
            Khadim Mboup-SO
            Brody Kozlowski-SO
            Chamberlin Burgess-SO
            Xavion Staton-SO
            Brooks Bahr- FR
            Dean Rueckert-FR

That is 14 of the 15 scholarships theoretically spoken for. Goosby is supposed to make up his mind by the end of the week. To my knowledge I don't think BYU is recruiting anyone other HS seniors other than Goosby. So once he decides BYU recruiting for next season's roster will shift to the spring recruiting session and be more transfer portal or European recruiting based. I think BYU will be looking for at least one impact scoring proven big, I would expect a 4, from the portal to play alongside Ahmed. I also think at least 2 guys will enter the portal from BYU. If Goosby commits to BYU at least one will have to move along to open up a spot for an impact proven scorer and I expect BYU to backfill others who enter the portal with upperclass portal transfers.

              Goosby likely going to Texas.

If that happens my guess is BYU is then in the market for two proven players from the portal-a wing and a 4. I would expect both to start. I do expect some attrition to the roster with players transferring out. I would expect Diomande is a better player than Mrus next year so I could see him transferring out. With KJ Perry on board I wonder how much time Pickens sees himself getting next year, assuming Robert Wright sticks around. I wonder if Kozlowski will want a new start-especially if BYU lands a high end 4 out of the portal. Time will tell.

Texas it is. So here is the updated potential roster:

                  Kennard Davis- SR
                  Tyler Mrus- SR
                  Nate Pickens- SR
                  Robert Wright-JR
                  Abdullah Ahmed- JR
                  KJ Perry - SO
                  Dom Diomande- SO
                  Khadim Mboup-SO
                  Aleksej Kostic- SO
                  Brody Kozlowski-SO
                  Chamberlin Burgess-FR or SO
                  Xavion Staton-SO
                  Brooks Bahr - FR
                  Dean Rueckert- FR

That is 14 spoken for. My guess is BYU is looking for a high end wing and a high end 4 out of the transfer portal. I figure there will be other comings and goings, and one going will be required if BYU gets 2 portal transfers, but I expect roster movement for next year to be dormant until the end of the regular college basketball season.

Yeah, but Dybantsa has never said he would do more than 1 year in college.
