  • Great win. Good to see Catchings come up big. Richie was Richie.

Not to be negative after a terrific win, but has Dallin Hall ever hit a big free throw in his BYU career? His missed front-end and huge turnover almost killed us.

So frustrating. That turnover was weird. Just call time out!

But then again, he played awesomely otherwise. I'll take it.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

        • Was at the game. So much fun. I get why AZ fans were mad about the foul.

I was mad about several fouls too.

Yep. It was a pretty weak call. But there were a couple of pretty weak calls the other way the last couple of minutes.

              • I don't understand the officiating. This game seemed like it was called very tight, but other games seem like a free-for-all.

Anyway, get Dallin the gym shooting FTs.

                • BYU gets a huge controversial whistle late in the game and beats Arizona by 1. For the most part I thought this was a pretty decently called game, but I would be livid if that last call that bailed out Saunders was called on us in that situation. Just a horrible call and I hate to win that way, but it is what it is. Hall nearly ruined the game for us with that missed FT. Of course Caleb Love goes off on 3Ps when he's been cold for the last month. But I'm genuinely excited about this team now. KY does a lot of lineups that I wouldn't think to do, but it's working.

Richie Saunders gets the Player of the Game, for the 5th time. It's interesting how his game has really taken off in conference play. He had the best PER and GSc. Keita has also really stepped up recently and he had the best TS% (didn't miss a shot) and ORtg. Hall had the best DRtg although no one was close to 100, although Arizona is a very good offensive team.

Trey Stewart gets the Struggled to Perform award, for the first time, but this may also be the first time he's played 15+ minutes and qualified. He had the worst PER and GSc and DRtg, although I think he plays great on-ball defense. His stat line looks like he played 5 minutes and not 18. Traore had the worst TS%, which is not typical of him. He wasn't taking bad shots, they just weren't going in today. Hall had the worst ORtg and I think this game shows that he really is a PG and not a SG. He's at his best driving and dishing, not sitting back waiting for a shot. Somehow 3 players all with different amount of minutes played all got the same worst DRtg, so that's highly suspect. Take your pick of Stewart/Mag/Knell I guess. Shrugs.

The season average PER has been updated for the two games this week and Keita has now passed Demin and moved up to second place. Top 5 are Saunders / Keita / Demin / Traore / Knell.

BYU is now 19-8 (10-6) and #26 in Kenpom and was #30 in NET prior to today. Arizona is now #12 in Kenpom and was #9 in NET. This is a very good Q1 win. Up next we stay in the same state, at Arizona St., who is 12-14 (3-12) and #62 in Kenpom and was #65 in NET. This is still a borderline Q1 game as the away range goes to #75.

                      • I don't feel even a little bad about the foul call on Saunders's last shot. Love was at the free throw line way too many times. In the second half 4 or 6 of his FT points came on really questionable calls, in particular the one where Keba jumped straight up and Love jumped into his body at the rim. Live by the questionable foul call, die by the questionable foul call.

                        What a win!

Agreed on that call against Keba. I was shouting verticality with my arms up. My wife looked over and was very confused.

Vehemently disagree with this take and the analyst who shared that same opinion. During live action, I didn't think it was a foul. When they showed the replay from the baseline, though, Saunders was clearly and significantly displaced by the defender's body, which is why Richie went flying toward the baseline (and probably why the shot wasn't even close). Clearly a foul. Not controversial.

That foul call on Keita was straight garbage (unless there was something from a different angle, which seems highly improbable). And, as you point out, there were much softer foul calls that went in Arizona's favor, especially toward the end of the game. McKale Center not used to experiencing losses, but have lost at least the last two when BYU comes to town.

Incredible game overall. My whole body was tense for at least the last several minutes of game play. Back and forth, haymaker after haymaker. BYU built the late four point lead, Love hits a 3. Hall misses the front end, Love gets 2 from the line as Arizona reclaims the lead. Saunders draws the foul and succeeds where Dallin had failed. Richie closes it out with the steal and smartly heaving it up to avoid the clock stopping with a foul.

Lots of great contributions to the win, including from Catchings. Would be great if he continues to find his groove.

                            This feels amazing.

Upon hearing my reaction to that BS call, my daughter paused her video game, removed her headphones, and asked what was wrong.
