Get by VCU and the path is there for an elite 8 run. I'm not exaggerating. I love the bracket. A little tougher first round game than we would like but who cares as it's very winnable. I'd rather have a slightly tougher first round game in exchange for a very realistic path in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Best first-round game


(6) BYU vs. (11) VCU: This is the good stuff. BYU has one of the elite pick-and-roll offenses in America. VCU counters with an outstanding pick-and-roll defense. This is strength-on-strength with everything on the line. On one hand, VCU's pressure defense feels eerily similar to the stuff Houston has used to make BYU quite uncomfortable multiple times. On the other hand, VCU's guards can be a bit erratic as shot-makers. This cerebral chess match between Ryan Odom and Kevin Young will be the goods.

1st/2nd round sites are not tied to the regional sites. That is to allow more teams to play the first couple of games closer to home. The NCAA started to do it this way in 2002. So it's been a little while.

Also after watching the video, he complains about the 6 seed but doesn't have a good argument or really any substantive argument against it other than he thought we'd get a 5 and that's what Lunardi had. As a side note, Lunardi is not the top bracketologist when checking his track record of projections against what the committee has done. He's average. But he is the most well known. I like him but his value lies more in educating fans on what the committee's process is and in de-mystifying it, which is a good thing. But anyway, teams are seeded relative to each other, and every 5 seed this year had a better q1/q2 record than BYU did. You can make a case for BYU getting a 5 but the 6 seed is fair.

Also VCU is concerning and he compares their style to Houston's. The problems with that comparison though is that Houston's talent is better and VCU ran up their numbers against a much easier schedule. Also he doesn't mention that Iowa State plays a very similar aggressive, in your face, physical defensive style, and BYU defeated it twice.

Agreed. He sounds a little bitchy about the seeding. Frankly, I like the seeding and think it gives us a better shot at going to the sweet 16 than being a 5 seed. No one in our half of the bracket scares me. Game on!!

So I guess VCU’s calling card is their defense. I like BYU coming off of games against ISU and Houston in that case; they should be ready for that type of play.

We've booked all the flights. Southwest lets you cancel until 10 minutes prior, so we have return tickets for both Thursday night late and Saturday night late. I don't see any same day hotel cancelations, so we'll just book after the game if we win.

I will be at a state commission meeting in LA during the game, so I will have to watch on the down low. But since the game is in the afternoon I may now go to the CONCACAF semifinals that are happening that evening. Both games played in a double header.
