I love Traore. He's the most promising BYU freshman I've seen since Jimmer. Great hands. Soft touch. His quick jump reminds me of Yeoli..I thought I would never say it, but this is a very athletic BYU basketball team

Gotta give Baxter some props too. He’s always been a firecracker, but he struck me as the kid who has all the physical tools to be great but likely struggled coloring inside the lines as a child.

Obviously it is not sustainable at that level, but he is always in control and forces nothing. There is a real chance for him to be at or near the top of the entire D1 NCAA this season, which obviously bodes well. As teams begin to sell out in game planning against him, others will need to continue to step up, but wow I am so impressed with his game.

yep. if a guy can average about 17 ppg with a TS% above 65%, that is elite level stuff. the kind of thing, for a perimeter player, that has happened maybe 4 or 5 times in the last two years.

OMG I was struck by that interior defense. It was absolutely stifling in a way I haven't seen in a while from BYU. #12 Oregon didn't make it to 50 points. I like these games better than shootouts for some weird reason.

The box score is a thing to behold. Twelve turnovers against a pressing, athletic defense was better than expected. And outrebounding the Ducks by 11 was huge. Before this game, we watched the Warriors school Brooklyn with Curry being Curry, and I told the missus I was prepared for a major letdown as we switched to the BYU-Oregon. Who knew the evening would only get better?

I was flipping between this and the Jazz game. What a weird feeling for a BYU/Jazz fan to see this kind of result in both games.

Oh yeah, I prefer this over shootouts by a mile. If you play good defense, you can potentially hang with anybody. The sky is the limit.

So many players did so well in this game, that doing a write-up of how guys performed seems unnecessary. But, last I checked, sports message boards don't exactly exist out of necessity.

Barcelo. Holy cow. Dude is money. Drive to the rim? Sure. Mid-range? No problem. Distance? Of course. Defense? Yip. Strong, tough, tenacious? Damn straight. BYU is so lucky he chose to come to Provo in the first place, but especially that he chose to return for this season.

Fous Traore. Unbelievable what he is doing as a true freshman. No moment is too big for him. He is playing great defense and has excellent timing for both shot blocking and rebounding. That block against a taller opponent right at the basket in which he was on his butt a split second earlier? Wow. I've also been really impressed with his offense. I did not expect him to be this good this quick. He was 5 of 6 (I can't believe he missed that 3-pointer) with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 20 minutes off the bench.

Gavin Baxter. Dude played like a man. In his 16 minutes, he had 7 points on 75% shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, a steal, and an assist. He can be very good if he can stay healthy.

Spencer Johnson. 50% from three and how can you not love that behind-the-back bounce-pass assist to Gideon George on the fast break for the dunk? He was also solid as a secondary ball-handler against Oregon's trapping defense.

Lucas. He played up to his preseason hype. He scored efficiently, kept the offense moving, tallied a few assists, and handled the ball well against the trap, surrendering just one turnover in his 30 minutes on the floor.

Seneca Knight. Looked much better than in the first game of the year. Very solid defense, hit the boards hard, collecting 6 rebounds. And his scoring is coming from within the offense - 9 points on 50% from the floor.

Lohner had some good moments (not the two missed 3-pointers) but didn't play a lot this game - just 13 minutes. His only points came on the backcut to the rim early in the game. He also had a couple of rebounds.

Knell is still struggling shooting the ball, going 0-for-2 from distance and just 1-4 overall. His minutes have gone down - just 12 minutes last night (20 minutes against Cleveland State, 14 vs SDSU). He was credited with 2 steals, both of which I believe were from providing help defense.

Gideon. I was surprised to see that George's only points in the game were from the aforementioned fast-break dunk. Like Knell, he was 1-4 from the field but he also collected 4 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and got a steal.

Atiki Ally Atiki - provided a few minutes of rest for Baxter and Traore. He was whistled for a couple of fouls, at least one of which he will hopefully learn how to avoid going forward.

Stewart. Looked very smooth on his pull-up jumper. Also had a nice block.

Hunter Erickson. I've been wanting to see him on the court after hearing about all his offseason improvement. After a cross-court pass out-of-bounds and a badly missed shot, I was not particularly impressed.

I really enjoyed the rebounding and the defense, particularly in the post. Blocks were recorded by Baxter, Traore, and Stewart. Steals from George, Baxter, Johnson, and Knell. I think Oregon probably had more team height, but BYU out-rebounded them 35-25. BYU had 40% more rebounds than the Ducks, in spite of being smaller. That is impressive.

You're going to win a lot of games when you shoot nearly 60% as a team, but when you also significantly out-rebound the opponent and hold them to 32% shooting, it leads to 30-point wins.
