  • To take a break here and discuss Utah hoops...

Needless to say I am way more bullish on Boylen than most. But today's D News blog says that Utah may have upwards of 5 transfers. Combine that with 2 graduates, if Utah loses 7 people, move me officially into the I'm concerned category.

If its just Cyphers plus one or maybe two, then I will remain in my current stance.

That would probably be the end of Boylen's tenure if that happens.

      Why are they transferring?

      Why did Weigh transfer?

Oddly I just wrote the same thing. It would also move me into the hire Tommy Conner group as I would be out of answers at that point.

Weigh was a huge loss for the program and a player that Boylen really needed to hold onto.

I'm confused as to who the 3-4 players could be that would transfer. Cyphers we know is all but gone, but who would the other players be. I could see Hines wanting to bolt because he was forced to sit behind Tavita for most of the year and I wouldn't blame him. Although I think Glover got a fair shot, he is another player that it would make sense if he decided to bolt. I cannot see Brown, Foster, or Henderson leaving the program.

Why not go after the guy at Murray St or the guy at Robert Morris? Heck, perhaps the utes could pay the St Mary's guy enough to come over.

Weigh was the guy that put Boylen off foreigners because he went to get paid in the Aussie pro league. Ben Melmeth did the same about 15 years ago. He said its hard to keep them motivated when they can earn good money and not have to go to class.

Because we need to embrace our roots and go with a Rick Majerus guy. I'm starting to believe that Majerus cursed Utah hoops and that we will not be good again until we fix the Curse of the Maji. Also, if we fire Boylen after next year the job is going to be tough to fill because any coach will know they only have a couple of years to fix things.

Just to clarify, I'm not blaming Boylen for losing Weigh just think he is the type of player that we really needed this year.

Because if we have to start over again, we need something to just make people care again. Tommy Conner would do that plus he would appeal to Utah kids and whether that is the best thing, Ute fans want to see it.

And he's at least a solid coach.

No I didn't think that, just telling the story and the reason why Boylen is off foreigners.

I understand the reasons for wanting Connor - but would seem to me that going with a guy who has proven he can get it done on the D1 level would be the wiser choice.

Boylen had been an assistant at MSU and had coached in the NBA, but was a total risk as a head coach in major college basketball. Besides, it worked pretty well 8 or so years ago for the utes in football.

All is not well in Utesville. I think that Boylen may have alienated some players by being loyal to Drca/Tillie and his inexplicable need to play Tavita 25-30 minutes a game. It was evident that this year was moving from a rebuilding year to a dumpster fire right about the time we lost to CSU.... AT HOME......BY 15 :swear:. At this point, he continued to trot the Serbian chancre and the French windmill for significant minutes. We should have shifted to full salvage mode at that point, which would have included seeing if Matt read is really a D1 player(he is one I think will transfer, poss to Dixie State), to see if Hines has a future as a starting or backup PG(I like what I saw at the end of the year, but not enough PT to make a full judgement). I think the team saw Brown go into F%#& the team mode, I am getting mine, and Boylen didn't put him on the pine to try to straighten that out.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

Ray Giacolletti had 3 2nds and a 1st in the Big Sky when we brought him in. He also gave Eastern the only NCAA bid they've ever had and that didn't work.

Plus Funk is right (damn I'm being punished for making a joke about him being wrong) this job will be all but impossible to fill. Conner may be the best option available.
