  • BYU looks to exercise their demons vs New Mexico

OK, pre-madonnas, an interesting quote from a SD paper today about this Saturday's conference game of the year:

he Cougars' 21st straight home victory set up the biggest regular season showdown in Mountain West history based on rankings as they host No. 10 New Mexico on Saturday. The winner will take the conference lead heading into the season's final week.

This is definitely the biggest MWC or WAC game of all time, with both teams so highly ranked and basically the conference championship on the line. Winner Saturday controls their own destiny.

3 biggest contributors to the inevitable BYU victory on Saturday:

    Home crowd
    Payback factor
    Destiny

BYU shall rise up and smite the Lobos!
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

After the game JT was talking to the Jimmers boys from Glen Falls, they said they were leaving Friday when JT said:

"What if you stay until Saturday you will get to see 2007,2008,2009 and 2010 MWC championship banners in the rafters."

I am curious as to what kind of exercise BYU's demons will be getting, is it just cardio or will their be strength training involved.

BYU is screwed. The game is on Versus.

SU is correct. This can't even be close to the biggest MWC or WAC game in history if Utah isn't involved.
                  Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

For a moment of seriousness, I can't think of a bigger game in the short history of the MWC, but if we're adding in our WAC time, I can think of a couple of bigger ones.

I would guess back in the day when BYU had Ainge, Roberts, Trumbo, Kite, Durrant, Craig, et. al. and Utah had Vranes, Chambers et.al., there were some big games. Bigger than this one.

The paper said based on rankings, so the criteria is pretty clear. Did the WAC ever match up two teams ranked as highly as BYU and New Mexico? It may have, I don't know.

I'm enjoying this thread thus far, but creek's woodshedding of DDD on a typo is particularly sublime.

In 1981, the U was ranked #7 and BYU was ranked #15 when they played at the then named Special Events Center.

This link shows how the NCAA rankings went week by week that year. BYU was ranked 18th in the preseaon poll but Uath didn't enter the rankings until after the 3rd week.
