As is every freshman that isn't 7' tall.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostHenderson is an absolute defensive liability
Tell me, how do you know Henderson? You must personally know him somehow in order to make this judgement. You must know his work ethic. How hard he will or won't work in the weight room. How hard he will/won't work in the film room. How hard he will/won't work on his defense.Originally posted by cougjunkie View Postand he is a marginal scorer at best. His best role would be as a spot up shooter coming off the bench if he is hot (which this year except against AF he has not been) then you give him extended minutes, if not you sit him back down.
Frankly, I see a lot of competitiveness and fire in him that I hope translates into his work ethic. I hope that the way that game ended for him burns him like a hot fire iron like nothing Boylen could ever do to him. If he can take his emotions and turn them into action in the weight room and on the practice floor, I wouldn't be surprised to see him hang 40 on BYU before his career is done.
Or, he could not learn discipline and completely flame out. Who knows..... well, besides you of course.

QFTOriginally posted by Senioritis View PostI just want to make sure I've got this right.
Utah has one guy that deserves a D1 scholarship - Jay Watkins.
Other than him, they've got a 7'3" stiff who is horribly disappointing because he can't guard all five of the opponent's players, a pre-pubescent Mike Rose who is, to coin a phrase of glorious redundancy, a marginally average scorer, a 6'10" frenchman who averages more fouls than points, an athletic scorer who can't score, an entire team who couldn't collectively guard Andrea Lloyd if she only shot with her left hand, and a coach who is legally insane, inept, unwittingly causes his players to swing at opponents, and is generally a notch or two below Cleve Steveland.
And yet, this laughable collection of humanity went into the most difficult environment in the country, got down by 10 right out of the gate and 18 in the second half, and then mounted an impossible comeback with FOUR guys on the floor who didn't play D1 ball last year, cut the lead to 4, actually made a game of it, and ended up losing because BYU has a once in a generation scorer at the point.
Have I got that right?
If so, all I can say is heaven help BYU in the post season. Either Utah ain't as bad as all you homers think, or BYU ain't as good. Hell I don't know, maybe a bit of both.

So, what you are saying is that our young players (the majority of that list) turned the ball over? Wow. Boylen shouldn't have let all those seniors from last year leave!Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostSo why is Utah below .500 this year? How about the following players having more turnovers than assists:
Marshall Henderson, Carlon Brown, David Foster, Jay Watkins, Shawn Glover, Kim Tillie, Jordan Cyphers and Jason Washburn.
One thing you are overlooking in your analysis: you are assuming that players don't progress. You're assuming that Henderson is going to be a 35% shooter his entire career, that he won't work hard in the weight room to build up the strength and stamina needed to be able to take the bit shot down the stretch. That Foster won't put on 20-30 pounds so that he's not catching the ball 15' from the hoop and learn some post moves. I mean, it's not like Boylen has ever turned out a big man before.

The truth is we won't know how good these players are for 2-3 years.
Frankly, I'm looking at the last half of the season to gauge how things may go next year. Half the guys on this team have never played in an environment like the Bleacherdome (tm) before, and now they'll have a better understanding of what D1 ball is all about, and it'll be the second go around on these teams.
In my mind, the one thing we are lacking is a true point guard. We have all of the other pieces, and if they have the work ethic, they'll be a pretty good damned team next year. It all depends on the whims of 19 year olds.

I believe we have the most MWC wins since its formation more than ten years ago (I could be wrong on that). We're working on our fourth consecutive MWC championship. We've won 7 of the last 10 BYU-UU games. We've got 4/5 starters returning next year and talented missionaries and recruits in the pipeline. I don't see anything to make us doubt our place as kings of MWC basketball.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostWhen BYU is having a good year BYU fans always think that the current snapshot is as it will always be. Seriously, I have been where you guys are now. It isn't fun. Getting beat where it counts and all you have left is, attendance, recruiting, the past and morality smack. The reports of Utah's death are certainly a bit premature.Last edited by U-Ute; 02-01-2010, 01:06 PM.

Actually, that wasn't smack. Our conference is terrible in hoops. There's no doubt that BYU has the best overall performance within the conference since the MWC began. It's just that we are a pretty lame conference, with little to show except a #1 NBA draft choice, which doesn't say much about the conference as a whole, just that Majerus was able to recruit a great Aussie player under the radar.Originally posted by byu71 View PostSeriously, I have been where you guys are now. There is also a current NBA all star. I do think if Danny Granger did not miss those 3 games......Originally posted by LA Ute View PostActually, that wasn't smack. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

What about total wins? I believe thats what he claimed was BYU had the most total wins.

The site didn't carry those stats. Either way, total wins are a rather irrelevant stat. When talking about league play, the only number that matters is the number of trophies in the box.Originally posted by ReggaeCoug View PostWhat about total wins? Really? I think we've got a pretty decent hoops conference. Or at least we've usually got 3-4 good teams each year in BYU, Utah, UNLV, and SDSU. Once in a while AFA makes some noise. I'm not saying we deserve the same level of respect our football conference is receiving, but "terrible" doesn't seem like the right word to describe the conference.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostActually, that wasn't smack.
