Speaking of the missionary angle, my wife was in a meeting yesterday where a sister raised her hand and said something like this:

"I am so proud of our missionaries. We were watching TV last night and there has a great big group of missionaries that came out to support the BYU basketball team. It was so cute; they even had their bike helmets on. It was inspirational to see them there with such enthusiasm being ambassadors for the church."
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

That is awesome. I personally was inspired most by the companionship of Elder Joker and Elder Gorilla.

That is really good. I will also bet somewhere in church some member expressed dissapointment that so many missionaries were at the game and not out preaching the gospel. I would also wager the person expressing such a concern was an "active LDS Ute fan."

BYU is favored by 8.5 tonight. If I were a betting man (which I'm not...at least away from the golf course) I would take the Cougs to cover.

I don't like that line because once again Vegas knows what they are talking about. It's inflated based on the Marriott Center but it's not so inflated because of the dominance SDSU has on the glass. Run away from that line. Cougs by 5 is my guess though.

I think it is a 5 point game, but BYU is so good from the line down the stretch it artificially inflates their final margin in close games.

I'm more concerned about this game than the UNM game for some reason. And I'm worried about offensive rebounding in both games.

Me too. I think we see BYU play a lot of zone tonight to keep SDSUs athletes in front of them. If they do they better rebound.

On the road, BYU held both SDSU and UNM (slightly) below their season average offensive rebounding rates.

That's BYU's biggest problem with the zone though, they don't rebound well. Mainly because Miles goes into a trance once the ball goes up. Isolate on him when a perimeter shot goes up and you'll see something amazing...a 6'10'' statue suddenly appears just outside the painted area. Less like Jerry West's image and more like David Foster's. I love what little Miles does well for the Cougars but rebounding in the zone isn't one of them.

If we do play zone I like it in spurts unless the outside shot isn't falling at all.

BYU is #5 in the nation in defensive rebounding percentage.

that zone is what saved our bacon against SDSU in San Diego.

Just for kicks, why doesn't the entire student section tonight come dressed as missionaries? In fact, the entire crowd. White shirts, ties, bike helmets....it would actually be pretty cool and would take the air out of SDSU's recurring gag.

I am guessing you missed steelblues post about it. I guess that is the goal and someone on facebook is starting a grass roots campaign to get it going.

Also they are planning on chanting "We're still Mormon"

                              SDSU is 277th out of 347 in 3 point%.

yes, I guess what really saved our bacon was that SDSU couldn't hit from the outside while BYU was in the zone.

But hey, plays to the weakness of the opponent.

I definitely expect to see a lot of zone tonight. Until SDSU can shoot its way out of it, that is.
