  • MW vs. Jimmer

Be honest. How many of you folks who were on CG thought about MikeWaters last night when Jimmer made BYU history? For those of you who weren't around, Mike predicted that he could shut down Jimmer in a game of one-on-one.

One of many fond memories from CG. I miss Mike.

Ouch. By comparison, Indy's comments from two years ago were dead on (and no offense meant to Indy, as other than his final conclusion, I thought pretty much the same things).

Don't get me wrong, Jimmer is one heckuva player but some people are taking it a bit overboard (mostly the guys on CB). He's quickly becoming Saint Jimmer, which I guess might be appropriate after the miracle he performed last night.

I'm not yet ready to deify the kid. As a long time BYU bball fan I know how this thing works. We play a bunch of patsies in the preseason and win maybe one or two games against some decent competition. Then we all get our hopes up this year will be different. Then we struggle a bit in MWC play against some decent teams and our stock falls. We get an 8 or 9 seed in the tourney and lose to a great team.

          Call me a pessimist.

You are over-analyzing things. He just had one of the greatest performances in BYU history. Just relax and enjoy it.

Well, I'll admit that I went over to CB this morning and read a couple threads. Some saying he is the best BYU player since Ainge and others putting him in the same category as Andre Miller.

I'm just trying to enjoy the feat without letting my internal feelings realize that we may have witnessed something similar to the football teams 59-0 dismantling of UCLA.

I'm also bitter at myself because I canceled the sports pack after the BYU/Utah game so I missed the game entirely and had to resort to watching highlights.

He may well be the best player since Austin Ainge. The Miller comparison is not apt, however. Miller didn't have a huge college career statistically (though it was good). What made him one of the all time greats is what he did in the post season. Rimmer has a long way to go to earn that comparison.

He had an amazing number of triple doubles or close to that for a 6-3 guy. But you're right. The difference is he carried the Utes to a bunch of NCAA wins--in three years, Final 16, 8 and 2. In his senior year they were upset in the second round, but that team went undefeated through the WAC season and tournament, and may have been the best team of the four for a time.

I didn't need last night to tell me how good he is. As a junior, he's a MWC MVP type player. I've only been a fan since about 1990. In that time period you have Mike Smith, Russell Larsen, Terrel Lyday, Mikeli Wesley, Mark Bigelow, Travis Hansen, Keena Young, Haffa, Plaisted, Cummard. I put him in the top 3 of that group right now. Through the rest of this season and next he might separate himself.

I don't think it is inappropriate to start comparing him to Miller. Given that the two are nearly identical in size and build, I think Jimmer is a very similar type of player to Miller.

                        Miller's stats:

There are lots of things it can be about. Stats is one of them. When trying to judge two different players from two different eras, stats are useful but not final. I'm just pointing out that the stats indicate the comparisons aren't completely inappropriate. Jimmer's stats are not out of wack with Miller's and given the height, build, and position of both players, some comparison is appropriate?

Has Jimmer been on as successful post season teams? No but he also hasn't played with upper classmen who would play in the NBA with him.

Using your logic Adrian Dantley was a better player than Magic Johnson, who never averaged even 20 points per game.
