Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I'm just waiting for the excuse that our churches have basketball courts in them and somehow it gives us an unfair advantage.
But we don't actually let anyone play basketball on them. I have a house full of kids that love basketball and live a few blocks from three different LDS churches. They get probably less than 5 hours per year playing ball on those floors.

My friends and I all had keys to our churches growing up, and we'd routinely play ball till 2 AM. The trick is to make friends with the son of a RS president.

Really?
Our ward building's court (an old style full size court with a real wood floor) gets used all the time. In fact, there is a twice a week night time game that is open to the community (but requires all particapnts ot follow honor code like conduct rules) and is very well attended. This draws local communiuty college team mebers and local HS players and formner collegge blalers and old timers etc and some fo the gamnes are very high quality. Our floor is used all the time.

I'm just waiting for BYU to play a team with quicknes including in the low post, that bangs, has a passion for half-court defense, gets back, and has an athletic defensive stopper they can assign to Freddy (this is in honor of statman's epithet for Obama). It's not going to be pretty. BYU is starting to look like those old Loyola teams under Westhead. It's being lulled into a false sense of superiority.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
Most stakes have become this way. Become or befriend the EQ Pres/HPGL and your problems are solved. The other problem is that all the gyms in our neighborhood except the SC are the new gyms made for a more diminutive type of athlete. The rims at each end are nearly touching each other or the free throw line is under the other basket. I exaggerate but they are short and have a permanent room divider that makes shooting from 3 impossible at one end.

We used to have decent games. Back in the day they used the week night games as a missionary tool. The missionaries would be there and would teach discussions. After the first time you had to take a discussion if you wanted to keep playing.

Sorry, but the Spurs play in the NBA. And we sure as hell know the team you describe ain't Utah.

We play pick up ball at the stake center once a week. But for kids there is no opportunity to play in the gyms. They don't let you use it for practices for teams. Church ball has been reduced to a three game tournament. If my teenager wants to borrow a key to go shoot during the day when no one's there, it's like pulling teeth. We could find someone to let him in, but they would make it clear they're doing him a favor sneaking him in and it's only a one time thing.
Same with my stake growing up. Every Sunday we would leave one of the windows to our Sunday School classroom unlocked. Then we could play during the week as someone would crawl through the window and open the door for us.
We would usually get in about 1 hour of playing time before the old lady across the street would notice the gym lights on and call someone to come over and kick us out. We never did any harm to the building and only wanted to play basketball, but still I guess the liability factor was there. You had to be 19 years old or have a 19 year old with you to play.
Funny thing is after my mission we went over and played after borrowing keys from someone in the ward. Some guy came over and tried to kick us out but most of us were 21 or older. He didn't care and still tried to tell us we couldn't play ball because we were too young. He finally left after we ignored him.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

And if they wanted to keep playing after the fifth time they had to take a quick dip in the bath tub located in the large room just outside the gym?

That's too bad. Our stake still has a regular season for youth teams and then playoffs. Our kids get in to play all the time. OTOH, we also have keys to the building.
