taking something seriously is different from nailbiting alarmism. as it turns out, bill ayers is just another old fart.

So what's the line? Where do we transition from unfounded alarmism to valid alarmism? What's the canary in the coalmine that a certain set of ideas are actually getting enough traction that the populace should be concerned versus just waiting for it to blow over? (Which Pinker points out in a recent interview with Coleman Hughes--this isn't America's first rodeo, and it may not even be the most significant.)

I have a hard time keeping up with the new lingo. What does it mean to be "actively anti-racist"?

If you're a white male, then the opposite of what you usually do.

I wish that Twitter didn't exist. It is noxious to democracy.

A thread on what cancel culture is and how it works. I don't believe it is correct to constrain it to the woke however, power games play out everwhere.

See full article here with references to Critical Race Theory.

Social Justice scholars, including DiAngelo, indicate that antiracism is a “practice” that requires a “lifelong commitment to an ongoing process” of fighting systemic racism (see also, praxis). This process expects people to constantly reflect upon the ways in which they, and others, support, or are complicit in, “whiteness,” “anti-blackness,” “racism,” and “white supremacy,” as these terms are understood from within the context of critical race Theory and criticalwhiteness studies. It then expects antiracists to subscribe to social activism which allegedly minimizes its impacts, including—as DiAngelo has put it regarding herself—through the concerted attempt to “be less white” (see also, problematize).

I wish it could be improved--while having no idea how that could be done. I actually find it consistently informs me of things that I'm curious about before anything else does. It only does that by people personally choosing to actively engage with it, which I can choose not to do, yet benefit from others doing so. However, its downsides as a cultural cesspool probably outweighs the personal advantages that can be gleaned from it. It's a weird place, and its relationship with the actual social sphere is like looking through a glass darkly.

                      That sounds exhausting.

Hmmm, I usually go to work every day, work in the yard on Saturday, go to church on Sunday (except not during the reign of 'rona). I provide for my family, take care of house and yard, enjoy watching sports and messing with computers and gadgets and doing home improvement projects, save for retirement, pay my taxes, and generally try to be a good citizen. I wonder if I should stop doing those things?

Only if you want to be anti-racist.

The Economist weighs in on the side of Liberalism over Critical Race Theory and cancel culture. Paywall unfortunately.

Of course you can! Only under these conditions:

If you are doing the work of actively fighting racism at work, in your yard, and at church
If you are actively investigating systemic racism in sports, technology, and home ownership
If you are actively making sure the oppressed also have equitable access to your retirement plans

Then you can be a good white.
