My inner-conspiracy-freak has been whispering in my ear -- the Somali pirates are part of a US-backed shake-down of OPEC countries. The theory goes like this:
1. Piracy, world-wide, has been on the wane since 2004, bottoming out in 2007.
2. All of a sudden we have a massive piracy spike near the Horn of Africa.
3. The United States has been policing those waters for ages. The US is the primary anti-piracy force in the region.
4. Somali pirates are not stupid. They know what an oil-tanker looks like, and they know that oil-tankers are untouchable, because they are protected by the biggest guns in the water (the US navy).
5. When the pirates hijacked the tanker, US war ships were in the area, but remained conspicuously uninvolved.
6. The pirates took over the supertanker around Nov 17.
7. President Bush requested 300 Billion dollars from OPEC Gulf states on Nov 20.
Now didn't that seem a little strange to anyone else? The US suddenly asking Gulf states to cough up 300 Billion to 'help curb the global financial meltdown?' I smell a protection racket.
