Wow. I have never heard this argument before. Is it really unreasonable to expect my elected representatives to read every piece of legislation they vote on? How much reading are we talking about here?Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostexUte's "Humor for the day" is a bit like "PAC's Beauty Tip for the Day", knowing that its author is wholly unqualified to weigh in on the subject.
I suspect that the vast majority (I'll go with >90%) of congressional votes, pro and con, are cast without the congressperson having read the bill from start to finish. That's what the hundreds of legislative assistants on the Hill are for. In fact, I'd have serious concerns about a congressperson who read every bill from beginning to end.
Are you just as okay with Congress not reading the
Patriot Act before voting it into law in 2001?
How much power are these aides being given?

I read enough of the literature to determine a good deal or not. Apparently you and the congress don't.Originally posted by SloanHater View PostDo you read the entire owner's manual of a car before buying it ?
OK, this may require you to think:
What do you like about the current healthcare legislation? What bothers you the most (if anything)?

I don't have to read it to know I don't like it. Nancy Pelosi and those of her persuasion put it together.Originally posted by Hallelujah View PostI read enough of the literature to determine a good deal or not. Apparently you and the congress don't.

I would like to hear more about the one I think Senators Wyden (sp) and Bennett are co-sponsoring.

I'm not sure how you draw the conclusion that your reading and research are sufficient to make a good decision, yet the hundreds of Congressional staffs, both Republican and Democrat, are not capable of doing the same ?Originally posted by Hallelujah View PostI read enough of the literature to determine a good deal or not. You damn people for the same sin of omission you commit on a daily basis. That is unless you claim to read every disclosure, waiver, and fine-print document that has, and will ever, cross your path.
It is a good start. I lean towards allowing States to adopt their own policies and plans under broad federal guidelines.Originally posted by Hallelujah View PostOK, this may require you to think:

My reading or lack thereof, doesn't affect millions of people. I would like to think that if they are voting on the largest entitlement in history, they just might want to be informed instead of voting party line. You don't?Originally posted by SloanHater View PostI'm not sure how you draw a conclusion that your reading and research are sufficient to make a good decision, yet the hundreds of Congressional staffs, both Republican and Democrat, are not capable of doing the same ?

Again, your premise is based on YOUR assumption that they aren't informed.Originally posted by Hallelujah View PostMy reading or lack thereof, doesn't affect millions of people.
