A study was done by the ACGME where they pulled the program directors. Most important aspect to gaining a position was not boards (which was around 16th). It was ability to work as a team. The higher board scores naturally select to do the more competitive specialties because they think they can get in. So, you need to becareful when analyazimg average board scores per specialty. For instance, one of my good friends failed USMLE multiple times and still got into anesthesia.
My raw score was statistical mean. I applied to 1 program and didn't even interview there. I am working as an intern at said program.
I stand by my statement that a good score is a passing score. Good scores on boards don't correlate with good clinical decisions, day in day out. Boards are a hoop to prove to the Dept of Education and other federal organizations tht we are qualified. It is really quite stupid the test does little to teat the knowledge that we will use to make evidence based clinical decisions. Specialty boards are supposedly much different.
Quick recap: step 1 is taken after 2nd year med school. Step 2 is taken during 4th year and has 2 parts, a written part and a mock clinical scenario part. Step 3 is taken during residency. Specialty boards are administered by the specialty and are generally every 7 years. This is what is meantby board certifiEd physician. Family medicine boards are 10 years if you prove that you are making evidenced based decisions with your chronically diseased patients using the chronic care model."Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"

Um, many physicians actually choose their specialty because it's what they want to do.
