You're incoherent today. Are you okay?

I don't think you could be more wrong. Take the Letterman saga for instance. You say that such incidents make her want to get her family out of the spotlight. I say that incident proves just the opposite. She was willing to keep her daughters in the world spotlight for weeks to score points against liberal Dave Letterman. And it worked. If she was acting as a mother she'd have let it go and nobody would have even remembered the joke.

I agree with this. I still can't believe she wanted the Vice Presidency so much she was willing to throw her daughter to the wolves. She knew Bristol was pregnant when she was invited onto the ticket, and she accepted enthusiastically. Despite whatever ambitions I might have, if I knew that by accepting the nomination my daughter's unwed pregnancy would be reported ad nauseum in every newspaper and discussed endlessly throughout the country, I (and I assume any reasonable parent) would have declined.

She doesn't care about that. Didn't you read Pac's post? She's a child hating monster.

Indeed. And she scored her point: it is not okay to make jokes about her daughter.

I don't think political expediency had anything to do with it. I think it was motherly instinct kicking in, pure and simple. I doubt she was thinking about what the pollsters would say once Letterman stepped between Mama bear and her cub.

That seems a wee bit hyperbolic, but what do I know.

I could be wrong here, but I suspect that the Alaska governor may not have been fully aware of the scrutiny she was about to throw upon herself and her family by accepting the gig. Like you say, any reasonable parent would want to avoid that. Either she is an unreasonable parent, or she didn't fully comprehend the results. The latter seems more likely to me than the former, but maybe I'm just being naive.

Maybe she thought the media would leave her daughter alone making her a little naive.

I do think you are being naive. How can you possibly think that she didn't know that she was going to have a ridiculous amount of scrutiny placed on her? An abstinence only proponent with a high school aged pregnant daughter? No, she's knew what she was up against and I don't fault her for going after her goals. I'm just laughing at the notion that she had no idea what she'd gotten herself into and that she's getting out of it all for motherly reasons.

Here's a quote from the lead story on cnn.com right now:

A Republican source close to her political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on." The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes she is "mapping out a path to 2012."

I'm sure she realized she would be scrutinized. I don't think she realized how bad it would be.

Sarah Palin is a punchline as a national politician and doesn't even begin to have what it takes. That said, she was fine as the governor of a small state (small population) and would be fine still had she not answered the call to be on McCain's sinking ship.

I don't sense she sought that out and she has really paid a price for it. Once you are in the limelight at that level it is hard to get back out of it while still in office. Maybe she realized that isn't what she wanted her life to be about. If it is because she has realized that the national political scene is not her future, then I applaud her for being able to face up to an unpleasant reality.

She only became offensive to me when so many Republicans got so strongly behind someone who was so obviously lacking in the fire power she needed.
