Also, I'm calling BS on 10-12 hours from NYC. It's over 10 hours under normal conditions.
Though not necessarily printed on the actual maps, the website makes clear that the driving time estimates are under normal conditions. It encourages people to arrive inside the path of totality prior to Monday.

I was told by a park ranger stationed near Weiser that they are expecting 6 hours to get from Payette to Weiser (14.5 miles per Google Maps).

Last week was about the haziest I've ever seen it here from some large brush fires in Oregon or Nevada. My throat hurt all week and the haze was so thick a couple of days that the sun was not visible. Luckily it cleared up and hopefully it stays that way.

We're kind of winging the rest of the weekend. We've been looking at settling on Weiser, Idaho. Birth place of Hans Olsen. Several ways in with decent roads. I've been emailing people in town offering reserved parking spots and had the following interaction:

"Do you still have availability for reserving a parking spot for the eclipse?"

    "Yes for what day?"

"I believe the eclipse is on Monday."

"Yes it is. Is that the day you want?"

Apparently spending $30 to park in someone's field is a common enough occurrence that such details can't be taken for granted.

Anyway, should be an adventure. Saw a video clip from yesterday with traffic already backed up miles trying to get into some small Central Oregon town.

I drive that stretch of the highway often. The video was taken a couple of days ago. It's crazy. The onslaught has begun. A few gas stations have reported they are out of gas. And I've seen price increases of 20-30 cents a gallon here.
