Fun. The caves were 20 degrees cooler than the surface so it was enjoyable.

Normally, 20 isn't faster (Google says a little slower). But we went that way because of Craters and the specter of heavy traffic on I-15.

A couple of my siblings drove up from SLC Friday night and traffic was totally normal.

The whole region has been preparing for the 'eclipalypse' for months now. Visitors starting rolling in around Thursday, and for a time it was quite busy. But someone flipped a switch yesterday, and our town is quiet. I mean, eerily quiet. None of the locals want to be out, but apparently neither do the tourists. My wife saw a local business FB group update which has many small businesses pleading for people to come shop or eat. They were probably planning like our hospital system; double the normal population. They may be camping north of us, but everyone assumed our town would still be packed. If they are here, I don't know where they're hiding.

Looks like we're amending our plan again. We're renting a boat and heading up to Black Canyon tomorrow tonight. We'll try to camp nearby and then get back on the water after the eclipse. That way we don't have to worry about an early morning drive from town.

My FIL has this happen on his farm once in a while when people come to attend concerts at a nearby venue.

I'm sure they are Canadian too.

I was just thinking about this driving situation. I'm up in DC with my daughter, and she has to fly back to Utah Sunday evening from Richmond, VA, and I have to get back to Fort Lee. I-95 is already a slow route from DC to Richmond most days. I'm wondering how long our delays will be on Sunday. I should've booked her return from Reagan.

Maybe he could just move his reservation to Tuesday and hang out and play some cornhole or something with the locals.

In my defense, that map is pretty useless if it is just reporting normal drive times.

Also, I'm calling BS on 10-12 hours from NYC. It's over 10 hours under normal conditions.

Pro-tip from an article I read recently - which I hadn't heard other places, so I thought I would share.

Astronomer says that, if you can, get on a hill or rise where you can see the western horizon. Then you'll be able to see the shadow of the moon as it approaches - at 1000 mph. Sounds like a cool thing to watch for as long as you're already going to be out looking.
