If the media never discussed stories that were reported by others because they were challenged or dismissed by government spokespeople, we would miss out on a lot. The net result would not be good.

The news this week and all the screaming hot takes have been hot garbage. I've unfollowed more friends on social media this week than I can remember.

Part of the problem is the American public no longer understands or makes an effort to separate hard news from pundit shows, talk radio, blogs and now twitter posts. Some of that fault lies with the media companies who in an effort to keep their audience tried to engage them in new ways. The old dinosaurs stilll do it best and have standards, with editors and fact-checkers. How often do we hear talk show hosts issues corrections or retractions? How about bloggers or people in the twittersphere?

There are fewer newspapers around, fewer professional reporters and fewer news bureaus. That’s also a problem.

The American news diet is poor.

I agree with this. I think the bolded part is a little off the mark however. I'm not sure we've lost this, I think we just had a culture in which, generally, trust in the national media had been earned. Instead of the larger institutions holding strong and elevating the conversation, they are being pulled down to the level of the pundits. The population is just now waking up to this.

Some of the kids with their tomahawks chops etc, were disrespectful, but they were reacting not initiating, and they are not adults and the standard should not be the same. I don't think there is every justification for doxxing and harrassing people. We're devolving that way.

Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't see the tomahawk chops. I did see the kids moving their arms up and down, but it seemed like it was just in rhythm to the beat, and not a Seminole-like "chop".

Yeah that kid's still an asshole and made it a point to not move out of the way and smirk in that guy's face. If he was so peaceful and conflict-averse, he could have just gone and done something else. His little written explanation of his side of things makes it apparent what a shithead he is.
