I think it will be the deciding factor. The election will still be very close, but there is a sizeable chunk of undecided independents who have said they would not vote for him if he were convicted. This is a point I haven't seen discussed enough. I tend to agree with you here. If he has the ability to minimize this and pretend it's not a big deal (just says it was politically motivated and sticks to his usual talking points) I think this might strengthen his support.
