Maybe Americans are ok with the idea that Trump's campaign team was coordinating in some way with Russia. Perhaps they think we we should be making Russia more of an ally while coming down harder on traditional friends like the UK, Germany and other NATO countries. I don't agree with this view, but it's consistent with Trump's nationalist, anti-globalist, anti-free trade ideology. I think it will turn out to be bad for the economy if we go down too far this road, and I'll vote against candidates who embrace it. It's also troubling to me that we would cool relations with other free countries while being more friendly toward authoritarian ones, but it's consistent with Trump's and Steve Bannon's world views. I wonder how long the GOP can support this direction. I'm not sure it's going to work for them in the long run, but who knows.

The support is more out of partisanship than out of a belief as to what is good policy. Just as when Democrats supported friendship with Russia.

Sure, most Americans probably don't think about it. But Americans do care as soon as policies start to punish them in the pocketbook, which is what this dopey so-called "economic nationalism" is eventually going to do if the GOP Congress goes against all their better instincts and allows it.
