Multiple news sources, including NBC, are now reporting that intelligence agencies did in fact brief Trump about the unsubstantiated dossier. CNN was right. Buzzfeed was still stupid to give details on anything they couldn't verify.

Not wishing to defend Sen. Harris, I'll bite nonetheless. Intelligence gatherers in the field have suggested that climate change will result in environmental threats (flooding, famine, etc.) that will, in turn, have serious political and military consequences. Harris wants to know if the new chief will impose his own filter on such information in a way that would compromise effective legislative and executive decision-making.

That's an extremely articulate and charitable interpretation of her question. The nominee tried to push the question into that territory but in fact her question was presented all the nuance of a grunting troglodyte, demanding to know "if you think global warming bad?" She was trying to score a few political points for the loving electorate back home and, perhaps, trying to establish that he was either uninformed or that he was out of step with his boss, neither of which have any current material relationship to intelligence.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

You must not have heard about the senate race here in Utah. I ended up leaving my ballot blank since there wasn't a write-in or "none of the above" option. First time I haven't chosen a candidate in any election.

Other than the "extremely articulate" kindness you extended, I agree. I was listening to the exchange during my morning constitutional and I was trying to justify her line of questioning as best I could, despite it being clear she was pandering to her base (as demonstrated even more embarrassingly by her questions about LGBTQ issues).

              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

So has anyone found "the blue dress" yet? I hear that Penthouse is offering a million dollars for the video.

I have to believe that the Russians/KGB, FBI (the agency that J. Edgar himself built), CIA, etc. has compromising stuff on about just anyone. Those Russian Putin b*sturds may have even paid some hookers to show up to Trump's party in the president suite at the Moscow Ritz and pee on each other so they could have a video for their collection.

Now that Obama has the NSA sharing all its spy recordings with all the other agencies they should a lot more compromising stuff (including on Americans) in the upcoming years.

                  • Listening to Mattis and some of the other nominees who, for the most part, sound like good, bright, dedicated people (not mention mature!), and contrasting what they're saying with Trump's persistently infantile tweets and his adolescent responses during the press conference. I'm becoming cautiously optimistic that Trump will provide more entertainment than genuine catastrophe during the next four years, while the real worker bees in the administration do a reasonably good job behind the scenes. I may be in for profound disappointment, or worse, but .

Remember the Bush years of dumbing down expectations?

As the Left has predicted doom and gloom and the end of civilization as we know it, it does not appear that every nominee is a troglodyte bent on returning our nation to the Neolithic Period. It will be easy for the administration to show it did better than expected. Naturally every bonehead move will be magnified, but that's the nature of politics.
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

It's going to come down to whether Trump's anti-trade, pro-tariff stuff gets pushed through or not. If it somehow does, there will be a recession because it's extremely stupid policy. It's also traditionally liberal democrat/socialist policy that he championed to get the vote of the uneducated riff-raff. I truly hope he doesn't really believe it so he can forget he campaigned on it.

                          • This Scottish newspaper TV program summary of Trump's inauguration is pretty good.

                            President Trump: The Inauguration
                            4pm, BBC One/STV

After a long absence, The Twilight Zone returns with one of the ambitious, expensive and controversial productions in broadcast history. Sci-fi writers have dabbled often with alternative history stories – among the most common is the “What if The Nazis Had Won The Second World War” setting – but this huge interactive virtual reality project, which will unfold on TV, in the press, and on Twitter over the next four years, sets out to build an ongoing alternative present.

The story begins in a nightmarish version of 2017 in which huge sections of the US electorate have somehow been duped into voting to make Donald Trump president. It sounds far-fetched, and it is, but as it goes on it becomes more and more chillingly plausible. Today’s feature-length opener concentrates on the gaudy inauguration of President Trump, and the stirrings of protest and despair surrounding the ceremony, while pundits speculate gravely on what lies ahead.

It’s a flawed piece, but a disturbing glimpse of the horrors we could stumble into, if we’re not careful
The "...and on Twitter" is an especially deft touch.

                              • This morning on KSL they were talking about the inauguration, and in particular how sometimes the inauguration (and in particular inauguration speeches) can bring the country together.

The reporter said she was hoping that Trump was able to do this with his speech.

I had to chuckle. For 8 years, Obama promised us hope. Trump hasn't even been sworn in yet, but I'm willing to bet he's got more of the country "hoping" than Obama ever did.
