  • Trump plans on using the military to round illegal immigrants. I'm sure that won't alarm anyone as that is normal. Will he just round up immigrants?

"Donald Trump said on Monday that his administration would declare a national emergency and use the US military to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

In an early morning social media post, Trump responded “TRUE!!!” to a post by Tom Fitton, the president of the conservative group Judicial Watch, who wrote on 8 November that the next administration “will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program”.

Since his decisive victory, Trump has said he intends to make good on his campaign promise to execute mass deportations, beginning on the first day of his presidency. But many aspects of what he has described as the “largest deportation program in American history” remain unclear.

Trump has previously suggested he would rely on wartime powers, military troops and sympathetic state and local leaders. Such a sprawling campaign – and the use of military personnel to carry it out – is almost certain to draw legal challenges and pushback from Democratic leaders, some of whom have already said they would refuse to cooperate with Trump’s deportation agenda."

      Is this even real?

      • I really, really don't like Hitler comparisons.

But I watched an old documentary last year. I think it was called "Hitler's Henchmen," and it related how Hitler's inner circle were a bunch of misfits and perverts who were simply capitalizing on the chance to seize power.

It's really hard not to draw some comparisons...

        • The Ezra Klein podcast with Anne Applebaum podcast is very good and more than a little troubling. Elon Musk is in many ways like a Russian oligarch. Combine the world's most powerful man with the world's richest man, surround them with department heads whose chief qualification is unquestioning loyalty to their leader, and our nation's remaining guardrails are in for their sternest test.

Anne Applebaum has been sounding the alarm for quite a while now. She's always worth reading as well as listening to. I subscribed to The Atlantic to follow her work more closely, although it's almost unbearably depressing these days. Back issues are piling up.

This is a sincere question: exactly what "guardrails" are intact? The courts, maybe (and even they seem weakened). Does she address the question in the podcast?

Not really, that was more my wishful thinking. In fact, she talks about how many of the guardrails in Trump's first term are no longer there. Replacing people like Mattis or Esper with Hegseth? Trading Barr (of whom I was not a fan but he was very mainstream with a true respect for the law) for Gaetz (who does not)? I sincerely thought the "Gaetz for AG" headline was an Onion thing--it's the most absurd nomination ever. As an aside, I wonder if a nominee's sordid sexual past (e.g., Gaetz, Hegsenh, RFK Jf., etc.) is thought by Trump to be a plus.

Putin's interactions with him should have alarmed any who cared our national security. Musk being the richest man hasn't inoculated him against personality flaws that could give unsavory intelligence agencies a angle to manipulate him with.

Every now and then I recall how David Frum described him: with Trump, there are many secrets but no mysteries.

I can't imagine an easier mark for our foreign adversaries. And, for that matter, any ideological opportunist who doesn't mind slathering on the flattery.

I think when it comes down to actually following through with much of the crazy that is spewed forth, a lot of people won't have the stomach for it.

Yeah, how do you grade the degrees of crazy coming out of MAGA? But I am talking about the really crazy stuff. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes.

                            • Sometimes I like to play the "what if" game.

What if the election weren't stolen and we'd be coming to a close on Trump's second term. I wonder if we would be better off getting that out of the way in one shot rather than spending the next four years with him in office.

                              • Linda McMahon, Secretary of Education. She was once involved in a WWE story line where her husband was drugging her into a coma so he could have an affair with another person in the WWE. She is also a named defendant in a lawsuit alleging that WWE, Vince McMahon, and her ignored and enabled child sexual abuse.

Seems like just the type of person you want in charge of education.
