You can parse words and be overly legalistic, but you're wrong on Trump and Russia simply being hysteria, in the same way you were wrong about Trump being inappropriately tagged as a racist. Trump does not deserve being given the benefit of the doubt.

During my run this morning I was listening to local (KQED) newscast that included a discussion of the so-called slippery slope argument Trump has been making (i.e., if we tear down statues of Lee and Jackson today, won't Washington and Jefferson be next--where will it stop?). A professor from back east (and I regret I can't recall his name) said there isn't a slippery slope at all. Rather, one should consider two things when considering the propriety of a monument's existence: (1) What deeds/facts/history is the monument honoring?, and (2) If the honoree is flawed (and who isn't?), do his/her accomplishments materially outweigh those flaws?

In the case of Lee and Jackson, their statues (which typically show them in full uniform heading into battle) honor their service in seeking to break up the United States and preserve slavery. Their claims to fame consist of little more than that.

There really isn't a slippery slope here at all.

Great article. I watched similar approaches play out over and over while on my mission in South Africa. I also saw approaches similar to what happened in Charlottesville which never turned out well.

I guess it's good that this guy didn't show up to the gig wearing a helmet and mask and wielding a baseball bat.

The honoring history argument is bogus. These monuments were mostly built during the Jim Crow era by white supremacists. And the confederate flag came back into popularity during the civil rights movement in the 60's. Again by white supremacists.

Taking down monuments to people who dedicated their lives to preserving slavery is not erasing history.
