If you complaint about the use of the term bigot isn't about shutting down discussion, I guess I misread your argument. I am interested in your comments on why a loaded term such as bigot is problematic, but not one of your favorite terms SJW. In fact, as I understand it the common definition of the term carries an implication that the individual is being disingenuous in their advocacy or simply doing it for personal gain.

I'm curious why you are so critical of the use of the term bigot to describe someone who advocates for denial of rights to someone based on sexual orientation, but throw around SJW frequently. It seems inconsistent. Do you want civil discussion or not? If the use of the term bigot is problematic, how is the use of SJW not problematic?
Pretty funny how you are trying to make yourself out to be a victim here.

Claiming to be a victim, calling Chik-fil-a franchise owners bigots... this is all classic SJW technique. Nicely done, funk. A worthy addition to this thread.

Oh brother. I'm not victim here. I'm not making myself a victim. Please point where I'm saying I'm a victim. A quote would be nice. I don't give a shit if you call me a SJW. I don't care. I'm asking a simple question, why is it problematic to use one insult and not the other? How is the use of SJW not another example of demonizing your idealogical foe?

One other clarification, I didn't call Chik-fil-a franchise owners bigots. I called Chik-fil-a corporate bigots. To much of a wide range of franchise owners to know if they hold the same beliefs as corporate.

You have implied that I am infringing on your free speech (ha!) and that lumping you in with the SJW movement is equivalent to calling you a bigot. You poor thing.

You are wasting your time with this appeal to hypocrisy nonsense. That is another social media phenomenon that I probably mock more than the social justice movement.

When I was a little kid my friends and I used to spend long summer days wandering around in a pack playing sports and looking for things to do. One day we turned the corner of my friend's house and in his backyard were a couple of dogs getting after it. We started hooting and hollering and scared the dogs, especially the female. They both tried to bolt but did so in opposite directions at the same time and ended up butt to butt but unable to disengage. Both of them were yelping and straining against their painful involuntary union but, no matter what, they could not get free. Hearing the ruckus, my friend's father came out of the house, saw the dogs, and turned the hose on them until they were cool and shrunken and could separate. He then turned the hose on us for good measure.

Right now I feel like I need to turn the hose on JL and Funk. And then on myself for watching.
          PLesa excuse the tpyos.

You should send this to a GA as fodder for his next conference talk.

Good grief, the students(?) who wrote this are idiots. "Hostility"?
The passive-voice impersonalization makes it even more ominous.

I understand that merely giving notice, or even just remarking that "hostility may be warranted" isn't an ipso facto threat, but it's probably in the ballpark.

How about something like "we will continue to confront hate speech with reasoned and vigorous opposition"?

ND students 'feel unsafe' about Pence giving Commencement

University of Notre Dame students have begun a “#NotMyCommencementSpeaker” white board campaign to protest the invitation of Vice President Mike Pence to speak at Commencement.

Last week, seniors Immane Mondane and Jourdyhn Williams invited students to take photos holding white boards with “direct quotes from Pence that are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, offensive, or ostracizing to members of our community,” along with the hashtag “#NotMyCommencementSpeaker.”

Alternatively, students could also write about why they “feel unsafe with the presence of Mike Pence on our campus,” with daily opportunities to have photos taken with their whiteboards through the week.
                      [...]

They shouldn't be worried... I am sure that Pence will bring his wife.
