Trigger warnings, safe spaces, and fascism on college campuses

Eh, that 10 minutes was it?! Or was there a separate "panel" portion that you didn't share? If not, then much ado about nothing. Enjoy the book sales Milo.

I tracked the panel portion down on youtube (not too hard to find, I should say). The panel discussion was stupid. The other panelists were in full (and largely irrational) attack mode and Milo would throw out stupid comments to bait them into it. It devolved very quickly into "go eff yourself" comments to the delight of the clearly partisan (and perhaps inebriated) audience.

The whole Milo hate thing is ridiculous as far as I can tell. He is sometimes amusing but often mean-spirited. He is sometimes, but not often, clever and he is very, very good at getting others to rise to his bait. But he is in no way deserving of the sort of vitriol he has received. He is like Anne Coulter. He just isn't worth caring about very much. If this is what justifies a riot, then too many of us are too primed to riot.

Yes, there was an extra segment posted to youtube only. It is funny that the two liberals quickly told Milo to "go f' yourself". The republican congressman seemed like he was wondering why the hell he agree to be on the show.

I dislike her as an artist, I dislike her as a person, I dislike her as a spokesperson for women of a certain age. I dislike her as a media darling. I wont comment on her pictures filling the pages of fashion magazines.

I can't in good conscience say I condone violence, but sometimes when it happens I don't weep. If a guy walks into a biker bar and tells a biker he's a pussy, you need to expect that the guy is going to get his ass kicked, and you're not going to have a lot of sympathy for him.

Thats a different question. You want to punch Milo because he offended you personaly? That I can understand. But to try to stop him from speaking at all and riot in the streets or contend he doesnt deserve to speak? I don't get it.

I'm not saying I encourage students shutting Milo down, just that I find it difficult to muster up any sympathy for it. The guy is a dick, and if a dick wants to come to my house and exercise his 1st amendment rights, I'm going to ask him to leave and if he doesn't leave I'm going to forcibly make him leave...first amendment be damned. The first amendment shouldn't guarantee you a forum.

He's not in your house. He was in a public forum where a variety of people are being asked to speak. You have no obligation ot invite him into your home nor to listen to him if he is there. But as you know that is not at all analogous to what has been happening.

Then you don't understand the 1st Amendment. There are areas of public speech and in the Cal-B case, the college Republicans invited him. If we excluded all jerks from speaking, we wouldn't have anybody speaking in the US Congress.

You're right. It's not nearly a perfect analogy, but the principle is the same. People are territorial, and when they see an undesirable in their territory, they react. It's not surprising. Here's another strained analogy: When you watch those YouTube videos where bullies get beaten down, are you offended by the violence enacted upon the bully or do you smile because the bully got his ass kicked? We're civilized, so we pretend to abhor violence, but deep down we all have a taste for it.
