They said on the radio that this guy's marriage was on the rocks.

      This was on CB

My parents knew the family. They're neighbors.
They were really struggling. She was a bodybuilder, and he was also built like one. They both were very driven in life.

My mom is pretty sure that she was coming to the point where she was going to file for divorce and that he couldn't live with that possibility. They were trying to work things out - they just recently got back from a long Disneyland/Sea World vacation over the break. Very, very sad.

Scary but also supported by some research. One if the important ideas with killing of self and others is developing the capacity to kill. Killing either if yourself or others is so aversive that most people need experiences that reduce the aversiveness of death. Jobs that expose you to violence (soldier, cop) provide those kinds of experiences.

It shouldn't be overstated, but I get his point.

Yes and while there is some screening for mental health problems with police officers the screening is more related to picking up employment problems than potential to be violence and usually a one time screening.

This discussion has taken a weird turn. What are the statistics on murder-suicides by cops vs the general population? Isn't it shocking because it is unexpected?

Edit: Or even just murder or suicide stats for cops?

In their mind, suicide is a blessing to those around them. Others will not have to be around the horrible person that they think they are.
And they want to take the children away from the awfulness as well. Either the awfulness they see in the world, or that they are genetically pre-disposed to mental illness and the same awful life.
In a strange twisted way, and through their horribly distorted lens, it's a logical, loving thing to do.

Anecdotal I know, but it's been a pretty consistent story with those I have known, or know about. It's not the only reason, but it's a big one.
If you have never suffered from mental illness, or been close to someone who has, it will never make sense.
I don't think that's it at all. When you're depressed, you don't care about anything...consequences don't matter. He was likely angry with his wife and felt his life was getting to a point where he could no longer control his life. Killing his family allows him to control his life. He would have killed his wife first, knew he was going to kill himself and didn't want his kids going through life dealing with what he had done. I don't think it had much to do with sparing them from the general awfulness of the world.

I know someone who knows and worked with the guy. He is shocked this happened. The cop was one of the nicest persons he has known and yet did such a horrific thing. He didn't see any signs that made him think this would be remotely possible.

If there is a explanation for such a thing, what you said sounds reasonable,

Evil in a person can be innate or episodic.

Unfortunately, when it percolates episodically, it can leave permanent destruction in its path.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Not related to the murder/suicide, but related to Spanish Fork and murder - do any of you here know Curtis Clark Green of Spanish Fork? Seems to have been tangled up in the Silk Road drama and gotten himself fake killed by some FBI agents. Not too shabby for little ol' Spanish Fark.
