You gotta go with mental illness. Any modicum of rational thinking along the way doesn't add up to this.

Has to be serious mental illness, drugs or a combination of the two.

Wow. That's less than half a mile from much of my wife's family. I've walked past that neighborhood plenty of times.

I know her pretty well, and I know who he is. I have been to a few get-togethers with friends that she has also attended (with her kids at times). He has never attended as he always worked nights.

I've known a few people who were suicidal (including a few who carried it out), and have talked to others who know people.
In their mind, suicide is a blessing to those around them. Others will not have to be around the horrible person that they think they are.
And they want to take the children away from the awfulness as well. Either the awfulness they see in the world, or that they are genetically pre-disposed to mental illness and the same awful life.
In a strange twisted way, and through their horribly distorted lens, it's a logical, loving thing to do.

Anecdotal I know, but it's been a pretty consistent story with those I have known, or know about. It's not the only reason, but it's a big one.
If you have never suffered from mental illness, or been close to someone who has, it will never make sense.

Brian this actually make sense. If you are so fed up with this life and the things in it that you want to kill yourself, why would you want your wife and kids to be left to deal with the same garbage.

That does make sense from the perspective that Brian brought up, but what really stood out to me about the SF case, as opposed to the Syracuse one or many that we hear about was the fact that he killed the MIL. Okay, so you want to protect your wife and kids, but your MIL?

It makes me think this guy had a serious mental illness and just snapped, killing everybody in his path with no thought for his loved ones.

Very possible. As blood was found all over the home as well as shell casings. The rumor going around Spanish Fork is that the mother in law walked in during or shortly after and she was shot downstairs and then drug up to a bedroom.

Either way it is a terrible tragedy and I feel for his wife and kids.

I agree, the MIL angle is something different perhaps. Knowing nothing about the situation, I'd agree that an ill guy snapping is a good guess.
Normal people don't kill. Mental health is a tricky, delicate thing.
