I compost all household food waste (even meat and bones) and the result is a dark rich earthlike fertilizer. I even put in grass clippings and leaves. We only have to put our garbage out to the street every 2-3 weeks because there's no stink and with recycling, the only thing we throw away is plastic.

Also, if you can get a coffee shop to give your their coffee grounds, and a barber shop to give you hair clippings, they make excellent tomato fertilizer, especially the hair if you add a little lime to the soil. You'll get sweet-tasting tomatoes.

I go through withdrawal so I try to start my own from seed. I was about 50/50 this year on tomatoes and ended buying half from a nursery. It kills me to hear about coworkers' neighbors who, in the same span of time, get their plants to grow double the size of mine. At this point, I don't want to admit defeat and will keep trying until I get it right.

I've always had good luck with seedlings by using potting soil (any kind) in old yogurt cups with holes cut in the bottoms. The secret is lots of light and good warmth and protection from drafts. Start them about 6 weeks before you want to plant, plant them well after the last frost and you're good to go. Once their in the ground I prefer meal bone to miracle grow. Il Pad is right about making sure the soil is productive, but that's more for long term than for one season.

I heard a report on the radio last weekend about how it is legal for people in California to prescribe marijuana to patients who have a doctor's note or whatever.

Thing is, federal law prohibits it.

How did California pass a law that is directly contrary to federal law?

I believe that as long as nothing used in the cultivation is from another state, the federal law doesn't apply. I might be misremembering though.

Never seen a single vermin around here. Mine is isolated and raised; there's no opening large enough for a rat.
