Are you sure you don't live in West Valley Finderson?

A West Valley City man is busted after police discover he's growing marijuana with his teenage son. Joseph Feichko, 41, told police he grew marijuana with his son so he would be considered a "cool dad."

    LOL! Good find, Coach.

Poor guy. Everything he is being punished for is currently legal by CA law if he has a doctor's authorization. This dude had nine plants. In CA it is legal to have 12 immature plants and 12 mature plants. Also, the guy is an idiot. Remember, never let a cop into your house without a search warrant!

I heard a report on the radio last weekend about how it is legal for people in California to prescribe marijuana to patients who have a doctor's note or whatever.

Thing is, federal law prohibits it.

How did California pass a law that is directly contrary to federal law?

Perhaps I should be consulting with self-supplying pot heads to figure out how to better get my tomato starts to grow next winter. Either marijuana's the easiest plant on the planet to grow, or these people could be state-fair-ribbon winners if they'd only harness their talents.

Why bother with the winter? I just buy the tomato starts in the spring from a nursery, plant 'em and let it happen.

I go through withdrawal so I try to start my own from seed. I was about 50/50 this year on tomatoes and ended buying half from a nursery. It kills me to hear about coworkers' neighbors who, in the same span of time, get their plants to grow double the size of mine. At this point, I don't want to admit defeat and will keep trying until I get it right.

                Understood.

Do you use Miracle Gro plant food and soil? It works.

Indeed. To bad he wasn't smart enough to do it in a state where he wouldn't be prosecuted. Gardening is a wonderful skill to teach children!

I've used the peat pellet starts the last couple of years. I'm going to try soil next year after seeing how much more hardy my cucumber starts were this year using real soil. The one thing that did go well this year was using a heating mat to keep the soil an even temperature. I'm going to get another so I can put one under the herbs as well.

I use Miracle Gro potting soil in my garden boxes outside, and it works great. For next year's starts, I'm just trying to decide whether to try using plastic pots instead of the peat pots.

I'd be interested to know how it works for you going that way. I've never tried tomatoes from the seed.

I spend a lot of time to make the soil in my garden more productive. Each year I buy a ton of dark top soil and 1/2 ton manure to till into my garden because there is so much clay. It's almost to the point that I no longer need to do it. My wife gave me a compost bin. I'm looking forward to using it.

I was working on the clay soil at my previous home up in Layton with some success, but I saw clay soil at my current place (though not as bad) and built above ground boxes. The thought of conditioning the soil in a confined space made me tired. So far, I've just been adding more potting soil to top of the boxes each spring (after losses from weeding, wind & clearing the plants out in fall). I worry about the soil becoming less productive, though, and I don't think plant rotation's going to be enough.

I promised my mom I'd come over this fall and next spring to try to rehabilitate the soil in my parents' garden. If you like your compost bin, I'll get them one for Christmas. Let me know.

I'll report back on the tomatoes next April.
