That's well done. What about "hippie"? I'm sure that's in the old man's dictionary. Scalia's anachronistic reference to "a hippie" was one of the worst lines ever in Supreme Court opinion. Who uses that word anymore? He sounds like the church lady or Eric Cartman. And providing an explanation for his quip in the previous sentence that marriage actually restricts freedom of intimacy is very bad writing. I'm glad he's finally the laughingstock he deserves to be. He didn't do his fans any favors with that appalling dissent, as the intelligent ones recognize. Scalia is overrated.

It would be funny to see LDS reaction if polygamy were legalized. But I'm not sure I follow that Kennedy's opinion supports legalizing polygamy.

(KUTV) Last week, same-sex couples celebrated that they could marry anywhere in the U.S. Polygamous partners could be next to celebrate.


In a way, polygamous marriages already won when a federal judge in Utah ruled that the state's anti-polygamy law is unconstitutional. The decision came after former Utah County resident Kody Brown and his four wives sued Utah County officials who said they would charge the family criminally. Brown said he is legally married to one wife, but spiritually married to all of them.


Now, the state of Utah will appeal the decision. A spokesperson the Utah Attorney General's Office said she expects oral arguments in the case to happen in the fall.

Here is the best argument I have seen against it so far...

Here's the problem with it: when a high-status man takes two wives (and one man taking many wives, or polygyny, is almost invariably the real-world pattern), a lower-status man gets no wife. If the high-status man takes three wives, two lower-status men get no wives. And so on.


This competitive, zero-sum dynamic sets off a competition among high-status men to hoard marriage opportunities, which leaves lower-status men out in the cold. Those men, denied access to life's most stabilizing and civilizing institution, are unfairly disadvantaged and often turn to behaviors like crime and violence. The situation is not good for women, either, because it places them in competition with other wives and can reduce them all to satellites of the man.

Of course, the real argument really boils down to what makes people happy and can the government stand in the way of it. For example, maybe women would be happier sharing a high-status man rather than having a low-status man all to herself (assuming her decision isn't influenced by angels with swords).

So any word on when they are going to update the temple law of chastity to something more like how it is worded in the letter? i.e.

"no sexual relations except with your husband or wife to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded." (which seems to be apply to same sex marriages as well now)

to

no sexual relations except "between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife."

I love the humor provided here. It is one thing to question someone's opinion, but to take someone like Judge Scalia and watch people who intellectually wouldn't be allowed to hold his jock strap mock him is quite humorous.

I'll apparently be the only youth leader in town this weekend and have been commissioned to teach all of the YM and YW. When giving the assignment, the YM president added, "You may need to take a quick read through of the YW manual, since I'm not quite sure what's in there." Hopefully they're not on the menstruation lesson. I keep waiting to get a call from the bishop about covering all of this, but I think he's smart enough not to have me be the one to do it.

Most likely it'll be in the chapel after sacrament is over. We've had so many special combined lessons over the past two months that i think the bishop is afraid of trying to have one specifically for this. I imagine the discussion will be more civil in the chapel than if it were held in the gym during the third hour.

This reminds me of a question I've had for a while but have been too lazy to research. With Fannie Alger specifically, although I suppose this applies to the other wives as well--there may be a question as to the timing of their "marriage" in relation to the sex, but there's no way they were "legally and lawfully wedded", right? What kind of authority was required then to perform a legal marriage? And was polygamy illegal?

I think another discussion about the church's stance on same sex marriage is just what the doctor ordered. People need to know where the church stands on this issue and a discussion during church will most definitely be a productive exchange of a wide variety of ideas and opinions. I'm guessing people will leave that meeting having learned something new.

It would be clean and simple if they would just apply chastity requirements to those who have Temple Marriages. For all others anything goes. I would bet a lot more members, especailly men would reactivate. Far larger numbers than any home teaching program could generate.
