Should be in the 'same-sex marriage is already in Oregon' thread

Yeah, I just read that also. He really is a good writer. His website is still in my favorites list, though he doesn't write as much anymore.

      Nor did I.

That's a good article. We should permanently abandon use of the phrase "same sex attraction". It's embarrassing.

Honestly, I don't really care, but I see people saying this a lot lately, so I will ask. Why should we permanently ban it? I don't get it, what is so offensive about it? Usually people point out that people use that word because they think that someone's sexual orientation is a curable condition. But is that really true? Some may prefer the word gay, but I guess I don't really understand what is so offensive about same sex attraction since it is just a different way of saying gay.

I did. My question still stands....what is offensive about it.

The real problem is that no one uses that term except for members of religious sects that are not gay same-sex attraction friendly.

It's kind of like when fans of BYU-Provo call me a "Yewt."

              • I don't usually read articles like this but my curiosity was aroused. I wanted to know what was offensive about "same sex attraction". I see the authors point of view and if I were friends with him and he asked me not to use the term, I wouldn't.

However, in the wider scope of things it is another one of those politically correct things.

For me same sex attraction is more definitive. You have to remember when I was a kid gay was a word used to express having fun, a good time. Lot's of girls I knew were named Gay.

I would hope the author would also respect my feelings about being offended and not refer to himself as a gay mormon. I don't refer to myself as a straight mormon. We are both just mormons.

                  That is probably true.

                  • SSA is not just another way to say gay. It's an attempt to delegitimize a persons natural sexual attraction.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Perhaps this is true, but could you explain why it delegitimizes a persons natural sexual attraction?

I am ashamed of myself for getting caught up in these assinine arguments, but at least I don't use drugs.

Those of you who feel the way you do should make a effort to get the dictionary changed.

Really, you are a mind reader. If I use the term same sex attraction, I in no way am attempting to delegitimize a persons natural attraction. Tell me which of those 3 words in that phrase indicates unnatural?

You are right - "same sex attraction" is much more definitive than "gay." Funny how only the strongly anti-gay churches have noticed - they should really tell same sex attraction people about this awesome term.

Interesting how you are defending a group against peceived smear by smearing another group of people. Carry on.

I have started using "those that prefer donuts but eat broccoli" when referring to someone that has a same sex attraction but marries a member of the opposite sex. Can I get a PC ruling on this?

Wasn't there a general conference talk on this issue: that it is wrong to characterize someone as being homosexual or gay and that such a description is a pejorative? I could be misremembering.
