Capitalism, regulated capitalism, is the best way of alleviating human suffering, because it's not a zero-sum game. Other systems are flawed because they ignore human greed, whereas capitalism rewards it. Regulation should keep the greed in check, and taxes assure that capital isn't forever concentrated in a few hands. I love capitalism.

Some Mormons, especially those from Utah-Idaho-Arizona, have absolutely zero clue about what life in a post-colonial society is like. The social safety nets were put in place precisely to right past wrongs. The effect was disastrous, but when I was a child, there were still people living in shacks without running water. Now they live in crime-ridden places, but that has more to do with the War on Drugs, fathers dying young or not having taxable reportable income, and the destruction of the family in minority communities, and less to do with WIC and SNAP.

Generational poverty existed long before the Great Society.

I agree. However, I think the war on poverty has been about as successful as the war on drugs. I think we have an obligation to provide a safety net and an opportunity for others to help themselves. I just think there is no real winning the war on poverty.

I agree. However, I think the war on poverty has been about as successful as the war on drugs. I think we have an obligation to provide a safety net and an opportunity for others to help themselves. I just think there is no real winning the war on poverty.

Agreed. And it needs some reforms. But, I assure you that you would have reeled from the living conditions that existed prior to its creation had you witnessed them. We're talking abject crushing poverty worse than anything that exists in this country anymore.

I think everyone's standard of living has significantly increased since then. I am not sure I want to live today like even rich people did in the 1950's. However, I will take this chance to point out that without the widespread economic development that capitalism spawned those folks in Appalachia would still be living in shacks.

Well, Appalachians still live in shacks....by choice. I'm talking about rural blacks in the Deep South. Their economic outlook has only worsened since the 1950's, so I wouldn't expect anything to have changed without the infusion of capital from without from Washington. State governments ignored the issues. It was only northern crusaders who made anything change. King found little audience in the Southern power structure outside Atlanta politicians. It was the media and the north who got things moving and put the screws to Johnson.
