Those beady-eyed bugs are back: Cicadas spotted in Northern Virginia

We had first moved to the DC area in 1987 when Brood X emerged (the largest brood by far). Creepy, like gigantic flies. Worse were the people on TV with their cicada recipes. But really dumb and harmless.

A work friend's son said the sound of all those cicadas chirping in unison at night, which is a constant for a couple of months, sounded like the Enterprise phaser banks from the old Start Trek series.

I hope our DC area CSers update us as the plague unfolds. And if you miss this one, Brood X should emerge again in 2021.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I'd rather hear the sound of cicadas then the braying of asses

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I love the sound of the cicadas. It's nostalgic for me from my days as a kid in Kansas City. I remember sitting in the kitchen on a hot summer night when the cicacas would swarm around the windows, attracted to the lights inside. My brother and I entertained ourselves by flicking them off the screens over and over.

The cicadas are pretty think during the summer. I think the sounds of cicadas are soothing, however, they bring out the skunks. Skunks love to eat them.

Bug-phobic dread the looming swarm of Brood II cicadas

Garcia said she’s already gotten close enough to a cicada, and the experience wasn’t pleasant. When she was about 12, one flew into her bedroom in Queens early one morning.

“It woke me up out of my sleep. I ran to my mom and said there was a big bug in my room,” said Garcia, a Spanish interpreter. Her mother rushed in with a broom.

“It sounded like she was killing a human being,” Garcia said. “It just kept going. She was whacking it with a broom and it wouldn’t die. It was making this horrible, horrible sound.”

Cicadas make Garcia frantic. “I freak out,” she said. “I hyperventilate.”
            Be careful out there, DCCSers.

A great website to report your cicada experiences.

Also, there's a good map showing the various brood areas.
