If Hill knew about any of this, he needs to be fired immediately and stripped of any pension benefits.

Ute fans only care because this guy is an Olympic sport coach.

They suffered athletes being subjected to sexual and verbal and physical abuse for years because Rick Majerus took them to a Final Four.

Substitute blacking out of athletes for athletes spitting up blood, inappropriate relations with students to exposure of genitals and tales of hookers to students, verbal abuse for verbal abuse and IMO there's little difference, except the allegations of pedophilia.

I view all sexual abuse the exact same. Clearly you don't and that is your choice. Chris Hill knew about some very disgusting and heinous acts (allegedly) and chose to do nothing and allow Winslow to choose additional victims. Sounds a lot like Penn state to me.

If Penn State has taught us anything (yes, that's the right comparison, although the actions in Penn State were far worse IMO) it's that things aren't investigated and justice isn't done until somebody makes a racket. Or, put differently, why are we hearing about this from Yahoo sports before we are hearing about it from Dr. Hill himself in connection with an investigation (at a minimum) or firing?

Having seen internal investigations close up, the way you deal with this kind of stuff is to immediately go on the offensive internally once you discover stuff. Clean out the wound immediately. It will hurt, but it won't hurt as bad as the infection. Maybe Utah is already doing/has done this, but there seems to be evidence that people knew things and did nothing.

This could be a horribly embarrassing situation for Utah, and what Utah needs to do is get out in front of it immediately. Release a statement expressing outrage, have an independent review of the allegations (i.e., one not involving any coaches or Hill) and then axe everybody involved without question if it turns out to be true.

This may be fair but it's not a defense. If this didn't come up when hiring him (as it may not have), it should have been grounds for immediate dismissal once discovered.

Frankly, I'm just floored at the lack of coverage of this by the local media. The Des News has nothing on their site, and the Trib just has one tiny little blip.

The UofUtah did conduct an investigation and cleared the good coach. As far as Dr. Hill getting out in front of this:

When reached for comment, Hill's office referred all inquiries to the university's legal counsel. In response to an inquiry from Yahoo! Sports, Robert Payne, associate general counsel for the University of Utah, wrote, "the Office of General Counsel does not speak on behalf of the University."
              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Let's clarify a few things here. The only reports of sexual abuse occurred prior to him being at Utah. There is also no evidence that Utah was aware of these reports until very recently when he was disciplined.

Utah's involvement is about covering up physical abuse of adults not sexual abuse or physical abuse of children. The allegations are damming, but they are not comparable to Penn State.

Good point. They are not Penn State 2.0. But in the future, when crazy coaches abuse students and the administration covers it up, we should all agree to call that school Utah 2.0.

It's not really surprising, considering that BYU is allegedly the big fish in this pond.

The problem is that perception is reality. The comparison is already out there and it's now incumbent on Utah to make the public trust the only focus of this incident. The damage has already been done, so it's time to get rid of all involved.

University of Utah AD Chris Hill vows to look into allegations aimed at athletics dept.

Matt Fiascone, father of former Ute backstroke standout Austin Fiascone, wrote a letter to Hill and others detailing problems within the swimming program earlier this year.

"As soon as Mr. Fiascone sent me a letter, I immediately sent it down to the legal counsel and gave it to President Pershing," Hill said. "I said, 'Could you find people to look into it because it needs to be independent of athletics?' I wanted to make sure I gave it the respect and seriousness I needed to."
Sounds like the good doctor doesn't care for the dirty work his job might entail. Independent of athletics? This is all about athletics, which is his job. What happened to the other letters written by parents dating as far back as Feb 2008? Did those get forwarded to the legal counsel and university president as well for their handling? Must be nice to forward your problems to some other office and act like you've done your job.

I find it odd that he is now promising to find out what his department knew and when it knew it. Shouldn't he have a pretty good idea of that already?

It seems to be a fine sentiment to come from President Pershing. Coming from Hill right now it comes across as the worst answer ever.

                                This quote is weird:

"I talked to President (David) Pershing today and I assured him that we'd find out what the athletic department knew, when we knew it and see what we need to do to take corrective measures," Hill said. "This is important, for sure, and we want to make sure we do our due diligence on all this going backwards and forward. We don't want any stone unturned and that's what we're determined to do."
So he's going to investigate when he knew and when he knew it? That's like having Andrew Fastow investigate accounting improprieties at Enron. They might want to look at having an external group look into this, or maybe they think it's no big deal because it's swimming.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
