  • I agree Chico was a weird mention as an analog to El Paso, and not just because Chico State was considered for several years as the best party school in the nation by Playboy (I only read the articles).

It's interesting that the towns mentioned as California's worst are those that bear the closest resemblance to Texas.

No, it is not on par with El Paso. Even Anonymous says it is a democrat sh*thole...

            Yeah, I agree.

Someone told me once (or maybe I read it) that the guy that does that commentary scene is/was actually a resident of Carthage. Apparently there are lots of locals in that movie.

Chico State May be one of the worst universities around. Some pretty venues but a dump of a town.

              • Chico is not bad at all. Great location close to loads of outdoor activities. Big wetlands for migrating birds with an amazing spring flyaway event. It is easily more scenic than 95% of texas.

If you want to find the pits of CA, you have to go to more southern parts of the central valley. Places like Lemoore, or Los Banos, or maybe El Centro. Now those towns are pretty bad and really are a lot like West Texas.
                PLesa excuse the tpyos.

While Chico State won't be mistaken for Stanford, or any of the UC schools for that matter, it has come a long way since the #1 party school title (most of the cal state schools have). It is so incredibly competitive to get into any of the U.C. schools these days, that the Cal State system (including Chico) is full of kids that graduated in the top 10-15% of their class due to an overflow effect. As a result the quality of the education has greatly increased due to the quality of the students getting significantly better. My Son who has a 4.2 GPA has a 1390 on the SAT, and is a multi sport letter in both track (four years) and football (three years) can't sniff entrance into a U.C school based on academics. He is hoping track gets him a shot at some of the second tier UC schools but he probably isn't quite fast enough for most of them. So he will likely be left with some cal state school...hopefully SLO we will see but Chico isn't out of the question.

I admit to be colored by those party days rating. Many Cal state schools are excellent schools but I had not heard Chico State had improved.

Fyi, my son got wait-listed at SLO with similar grades and scores. The application is quick at least. No essays, no letters of recommendation. Pure numbers and extra curriculars.

There are two schools in SLO, Cal Poly and Cuesta College. It's pretty easy to get into Cuesta - my two youngest kids both went there. Then one went to Chico State and the other to Cal State East Bay. The education at Chico State seemed decent enough.

Chico is a nice town it seems... Chico State is the #1 party school in the US.

When we lived in Bakersfield for a couple of years, people (especially from Utah) would ask "Oh, the place with the big thermometer?".

People are idiots. No I didn't live in the place with the big thermometer. Sheesh.

I'm pretty sure that is a was instead of is. It's probably a school in an awesome town like UTEP that holds that title now.
