I'm more of a drama princess. I think the only thing I hope from an Apprentace presidency is that it makes America rethink an antiquated election system that makes many votes worthless and a primary system that places huge importance on such powerful states as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. (Sorry wuap, but I'd say the same thing if Oregon was so influential in the primary system)
      Get confident, stupid

The implications of a Trump presidency would go far beyond those issues.

I am a drama king, dammit.

pretty sure it would only take one federal law to completely re-write the nomination process. Everyone has always known it was silly but we've held onto it for the sake of nostalgia and tradition. Maybe the Trump circus will be enough to force a change once he loses in embarrassing fashion and the republican party as we know it blows up and re-emerges as perhaps a different GOP or even two new parties.

It's funny how many people have mocked the comparison but no one has ever refuted the specific commonalities that I described between the two. Speaks volumes.

Yeah, it does speak volumes, but the point to which it speaks is not what you think. It is such a ridiculous comparison that it doesn't warrant a refutation.

Trump has said he thinks the Japanese interment camps were a good thing. Pretty sure Hitler agrees in principle although he would have wanted to take that idea to the next level. The Hitler comparisons get some shock value, but a Mussolini or Franco type fascism is probably a better comparison to what Trump aspires to. I don't fear Trump being the type of fascist leader like Hitler who was bent on taking over the world. He'd be more isolationist like the other two guys I mention. But I do think there is reason to worry his unpredictable knee-jerk tendencies would get us involved in some kind of foreign policy disaster a sane leader would keep us away from.

And yes, I'm mostly kidding about much of this, but not completely. I don't think you can completely dismiss Trump's admitted admiration for fascist dictators. There is just way too much "crazy" in Trump for me to even consider thinking about voting for him. He likes quoting Mussolini and thinks Vladimir Putin is a great example of a national leader. It would be hard to make this stuff up.

But now the closer we get to the election, more and more posters are starting to argue how Hillary is either worse, or "just as bad" and we witness more and more Trump apologetics and even outright mocking of criticism of Trump. This is how it happens. This is how otherwise sane people do unthinkable things.

God help us, Trump may actually win.
                Agreed.

It's not that people are unintelligent--some people who support Trump clearly are so. But when it comes to politics, our emotional and irrational tendencies can prevail.

Trump is the most outrageous, over-the-top candidate to get a nomination in our lifetimes. By a mile. They say satire is dead with Trump because you can't out-crazy his reality. The fascist parallels are perfectly valid.

Please clarify, are you speaking of those who eventually vote for Trump or vote for Hillary.

                    • I've been away from the news this morning, I guess Trump is picking Mike Pence as his running mate. Maybe this was mentioned a couple pages back, I have no idea how old that news is.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                        • So he goes with the traditional boring VP pick. It probably helps him with some mainstream type republicans. On the other hand, his ego is probably too big to consider he's now given those who will want to impeach him less fear of the consequences of that. I was hoping for a clown choice like Christie or Gingrich, or Palin, just for the entertainment value and because it would have made him less electable.

The labyrinth you've constructed here means that Donald Trump couldn't have made a good choice. The "boring" choice really exemplifies Trump's ego and stupidity in failing to realize that everyone will be chomping (or champing) at the bit to impeach so they can have a President Pence. The other possible type of choice -- Gingrich, Palin, etc -- would have been a "clown" choice that would have hurt his election chances.

Truth be told, Mike Pence was a pretty good choice. It's the first really important choice a nominee has to make, so compare Trump's choice here with John Kerry and John McCain's selections in 2004 and 2008.

Good. That moves me up to 75% from 60%

I think I just said Pence was a pretty good choice. Sometimes "boring" is just what is needed.

It doesn't help him to get my vote though. But from a campaign perspective it was a good choice. I want him to lose, so I was hoping for a crappy choice to make it easier to defeat him. Any republican partisan on here would admit they hope the same thing from Hillary. They'd love it if she chose Bernie or Al Sharpton, or someone like that. Trump has already done too much bad to ever win me over. But I usually vote Libertarian anyway. I don't agree that much with Pence's historical positions on a lot of things, but he's at least a reasonable, not too extreme republican politician.
