Republican establishment has plans to ditch Trump if he wins big on ‘Super Tuesday’

The Republican establishment is talking behind closed doors about ways to deal with the rise of Donald Trump, even threatening to bring Mitt Romney into the race for the White House, if Marco Rubio does poorly during Tuesday’s primaries.

“The leaders of the GOP establishment plan to steal the nomination from Trump and to thwart the popular will, and they don’t care if they lose. Trump threatens all the establishment GOP leaders’ cozy deals. He’s a threat to the lobbying class. He’s a threat to the consultant class. He’s a threat to the globalists,” said GOP strategist Roger Stone in a WND interview.

He said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan believe they have a better chance of keeping their jobs with a Democrat in office. Some Republican leaders have threatened to vote for Hillary Clinton over Trump because her plans line up with the GOP agenda in Congress.

“The Democrats and the GOP in Congress both want to continue open borders, to introduce amnesty for the illegal immigrants already in the United States, to give the green light to the Trans-Pacific Partnership and ship more millions of jobs overseas, and to expand the welfare state and retain Obamacare, and to allow Goldman Sachs and their friends on Wall Street to make all the money they want to make,” said Stone.
David Gergen agreed with Stone in a CNN interview. He is a former White House advisor who served under several presidential administrations, both Democratic and Republican and is now a political commentator.

“There’s going to be an effort to unravel this,” he said.

Gergen also pointed out that in recent days Romney has not endorsed Rubio, as expected, but has criticized Trump.

Hence, Trump has lost 3 of the 4 closed primaries. I believe a big majority of the remaining primaries are closed. Rubio is doing the dirty work of calling Trump a small-dicked conman while Cruz may get the reward.

I realize that Texas was in the mix last night, but Cruz still won that it handily and Trump only received 40-50 more delegates overall.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Mitt's going full attack dog on Trump. Nothing to lose, although I'm sure he realizes he'd moonwalk into the oval office if he ran this year.

Also, I really don't understand what Mitt has to gain at all by getting involved in politics if he doesn't foresee a run at the presidency.

the chances of romney preventing trump from being president are greater as an independent candidate than trying to win the nomination

The problem with this angle is that SOMEONE has tyo win and if Romeny does that he and trump will duel for second place, as it will guarantee HRC wins first place.
                  PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Hillary won't be able to do much with the Congress. it would almost be status quo. Hillary would also be predictable and stoppable through the usual procedural methods. It's not really obvious to anyone really what exactly Trump would do or want to do. In the view of someone like Romney, Trump threatens to basically blow apart the Republican Party and then build it back the way he wants. Trump in office can easily mean passing lots of legislation with the help of the democrats and a handful of Republicans that traditional establishment Republicans like Romney don't want. I can see a lot of scenarios where Trump starts acting like a pro-union democrat on things like trade, taxes, etc.

To someone like him that's even scarier than 4 more years of a democratic president who is slightly less extreme than the current one. Hillary wins, Trump goes away and life moves on. In four more years there is no Jeb Bush to keep away all other potentially strong establishment candidates. The republicans have had a silly habit the last several cycles of nominating whoever's "turn" it was, and this time the establishment money decided early on it was Jeb. Next time Jeb is out of the way and they get a stronger field than this time. Maybe that's his angle.

Good riddance. Although I will always be grateful to him for a much needed laugh during the primary season when he stayed backstage with a dumb grin on his face during the debate introductions.
