Has anyone even attempted to think through the ramifications of that language or is that asking too much for the proponents?

To put this in the platform of a major political party is truly incredible. And note, by the way, that if the 14th Amendment DOES apply to the unborn, then rape is not something that would permit an abortion- at least, at a minimum, if the doctor was employed by the government or worked at a government facility. Obviously not. That would be killing a "person" without due process. It's irrelevant how that "person" was formed. It would also prohibit abortion where the life of the mother is in jeopardy.

It's so insanely radical that I can't fathom how you or anyone else (let alone an entire party) could line up in support of such idiocy.
Not surprising. Actually, I don't think the language matters much. The major purpose of any constitutional amendment on abortion is to take the matter out of the hands of the supreme court, where is clearly does not belong. This language in no way requires any state or the federal government to outlaw abortion from rape or when the life of the mother is in danger, as many are claiming in this thread. It just doesn't.

As for whether a majority would support it, it depends on how you ask the question. But the data shows that the pro-life position is becoming even more popular in recent years (its a trend) and that about as many people are pro-life as are pro-choice. Them's the facts. I understand that you don't like them, but you might as well get used to them. When you can begin to fathom how half of the country thinks, you can probably start to have an intelligent discussion on the subject.

I'm sure this must be how you feel about gay marriage, as it is experiencing a huge uptick in popularity.

Again untrue. To ban abortion through an amendment, what you need is simply something that says abortion is illegal and nobody had a right to one. That isn't what they are proposing. Instead, they are proposing the much more radical idea that the unborn should have 14th Amendment protections. The two are not the same thing.

To my untrained lawyer ear, this sounds a lot like fear mongering. Granted I don't support an outright ban on abortion, but you (and maybe the Dem talking points people) seem to be taking a very extreme position on what the GOP is trying to do.

My gosh I just saw a poll supposedly taken after that buffoon Akin made his idiotic comments. He is still in the lead over Claire M.

The dems ought to think about asking Claire to withdraw if she can't beat a dope like him.

All the local Tom Sawyers don't really pay attention to the news, but they will find out eventually. There is just a delay in it being reflected in the polls.

That said, I have heard of several instances where young Missouri women were forced to carry their child to term even though it was a product of a rape. His views are not outlandish for this part of the world.

I'll grant you it's difficult not to sound extreme when describing the Republican position on this issue.

                        • Based on some quick research, it appears that one of every four pregnancies amongst African-Americans ends in an abortion.

Huh. You'd think there would be a few Republicans who could get behind that.

Not for a liberal. Remember, only conservatives can be vilified for a comment like that.
