  • Her name is really "Krystal Ball?"
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I'm assuming that you're an informed person concerned with the substance of the question of who Paul Ryan really is. And that you know enough to know that Bowles is as credible as any voice in the D Party. And that specifically on budgetary matters he is uniquely qualified to comment on seriousness and honesty.

And then there's the level of popular perception - you're probably right that on this level Bowles assessment isn't going to set the herd-following rock-the-vote types ablaze - but packaged effectively by the R/R campaign it can still help make a dent.

Tex, be nice! Can't be comparing fellow CUF'ers to DWS - I can't imagine a more vicious insinuation!

Sure- Bowles is credible on budgetary matters. And yes- I actually like Bowles quite a bit. But what has Bowles said that should cause Democrats to be concerned? That he personally likes Ryan and thinks he is a smart guy? That he thinks Ryan put together a budget that represents Ryan's honest views about fiscal policy? I guess to all of that I would say, "so what?" Does Bowles think Ryan's plan is a good one or one he would vote for? Bowles has said the answer to that is definitely "no." So we have a guy that Bowles personally likes and thinks is smart but with whom he disagrees on substance. That used to be how leaders in parties acted in general- until everything became dysfunctional in politics.

      • If Bowles' praise of Ryan wasn't enough then let's add the other chair's of President Obama's commission on debt and deficit reduction opinion...

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1808086.html

Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) praised Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Friday, lauding the Wisconsin congressman as a "spokesman of hard truth against fakery."

Simpson, who co-chaired President Obama's commission on debt and deficit reduction with Erskine Bowles, said during an appearance on Fox News that Ryan "encourages" him.

"Erskine [Bowles] and I felt he was one of the sharpest guys we dealt with," Simpson said. "He doesn’t have to have a staff member there feeding him stuff and little memos. He can go a half an hour without a note. He knows the issues.”

“He also said to us -- I think a year and a half ago -- you know, 'If we can’t get something done in America, there’s no need for me to smash my head into the wall around here, I have things to do back in Wisconsin,'" Simpson said. "And now, this thing comes to him, I don’t think he was seeking it, but let me tell you, he becomes a spokesman of hard truth against fakery."

And I was thinking that Alan Simpson was the spokesman of hard truth against fakery. For example, what Simpson said about the budget...

"We're going to get rid of all earmarks, all waste, fraud and abuse, all foreign aid, Air Force One, all congressional pensions. That's just sparrow belch in the midst of the typhoon. That's about 6, 8, 10 percent of where we are. So, I'm waiting for the politician to get up and say, there's only one way to do this: you dig into the big four, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and defense. And anybody giving you anything different than that, you want to walk out the door, stick your finger down your throat, and give them the green weenie."

"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU.
"Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek.

As for seriousness - I much prefer "unserious" to Krugman's hyper self-seriousness, seriously wanking to sanctimonious moods like "The Conscience of a Liberal" (PK gazes seriously, in profile, into the distance!).

Erskine Bowles and Ron Wyden are serious men and men of the left and men that are trusted by a wide cut of their publics - they have evaluated Ryan up close and found him to be very serious - as well as damn smart.

It's reassuring to know that Oklahoma is safe, even without Babs there to bring the state in for Mitt.

My thoughts also. I think the cover is much more damaging than the article.
