VC, tell me it isn't so.
I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that the Chicago Tribune is somewhat right of center. There are a few somewhat conservative newspapers (apart from the obvious like the Wall Street Journal), just off the top of my head -- Las Vegas Review Journal, San Diego Union Tribune, OC Register and the Detroit News.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

They endorsed Obama (at least twice).

2008 was the first time the Chicago Tribune ever endorsed a Democrat for President. They endorsed Bush in 2004 so it simply wasn't that they declined to endorse anyone in certain elections.

I can understand 2008, Obama was still an unknown commodity and he had pulled a pretty good con job to the point that many on the center-right like Peggy Noonan and David Brooks supported him.

Their endorsement in 2012 is a mystery and it perhaps points to a fundamental change at the Tribune.

        • Obamacare is working:

“I recently received a letter from a woman named Jessica Sanford in Washington state, and here’s what she wrote. ‘I am a single mom, no child support, self-employed, and I haven’t had health insurance for 15 years because it is too expensive. My son has ADHD and requires regular doctor visits, and his meds alone cost $250 a month. I have had an ongoing tendinitis problem due to my line of work that I haven’t had treated. Now, finally, we get to have coverage because of the ACA for $169 a month. I was crying the other day when I signed up. So much stress lifted.’

“Now, that is not untypical for a lot of folks like Jessica who have been struggling without health insurance. That is what the Affordable Care Act is all about.”

Oh wait... an update. That $452/mo subsidy she was told that she was getting was a mistake.

Rude Awakening for Federal Way Woman Who Got Shout-Out From President – Can’t Afford Obamacare Policy After All

After Jessica Sanford Sends Fan Letter to Obama for Making Insurance Affordable, State Says She Must Pay Full Ticket

OLYMPIA, Nov. 17.—Jessica Sanford, the Federal Way woman who got a shout-out from President Obama last month with her fan letter for the Affordable Care Act, got a rather rude awakening last week. Turns out she doesn’t qualify for a tax credit after all.

At least that’s what the letter said that she got from the state. Now she says her dream of affordable health insurance has gone poof. She can’t afford it. She’ll have to go without. “I’m really terribly embarrassed,” she says. “It has completely turned around on me. I mean, completely.”
          [...]
Before the Affordable Care Act came along, she was getting rate quotes of $500 and $600 a month. She just couldn’t afford health insurance, and her health care costs left her strapped.

It seems she was getting quotes for less before Obamacare. How can that be?

Don't worry though she still a big fan. After all it is the state's fault:

She says she wants to make it clear she has no beef with Obama and Obamacare. She still believes in the Affordable Care Act. “I don’t want this to be a political thing,” she says. “I don’t want to be bashing the president. I don’t want to be bashing the ACA. I don’t want to come across as saying that. I am a big Obama fan.

“But to me there is a big problem with the way the state is handling it. It is like a big machine – you put your stuff in there and once you do it, it is impossible to do anything. You can’t get through to them [on the phone], the website is really limited. So you are stuck on this big treadmill of bureaucracy, and you know, it feels very out of control.
It is like it is her first experience with bureaucracy.

Whether she blames the Federal government or not, it is quite an embarassment for Obama. He quoted her and bragged on the ACA because of her experience. I don't remember him giving the State all the credit, although I may have not heard his full statement.

When they get the web site up and running, then we are really going to see if this democrat dream of health care for everyone at a reasonable cost really has a chance of working.

It was all just a misunderstanding... The website assumed that she was making $4,166 per year not $4,166 per month:

Four days after President Obama made his address, the state health exchange publicly revealed a grevious error – its tax-credit calculations were all wrong. The state had been submitting monthly income information to the federal data hub, but the federal computers were expecting an annual figure. Suppose a person claimed an income of $50,000 a year — the tax credit was based on an income of $4,166 a year. The higher the income, the bigger the error.
See... if she was only making $4,166 per year and paying $169/mo for Obamacare she would only be paying $2,028 per year (or about half of what she was earning) for healthcare. Now they have the website fixed she only has to pay $7,452 per year based on her $50,000/yr income. Not to mention the annual deduction of something around $10,000. With her son's $250/mo ADHD medication she would only have about $7,000 left on that deductible before the insurance kicked in. Or she could pay the $95 fee per year and continue using the "free rider" healthcare at the emergency room. With Obamacare there are lots of choices! I wonder which she is going to make.

Since she's still a big fan of Obama, I think she'll take one for the team and buy the insurance so she can subsidize others who are crack addicts and want a sex change operation.

In fact, I'm with Obama on this one -- tens of millions of people will make decisions against their own financial self-interest and the exchanges and the connected risk pools will turn out better than Obama expected.

God bless Jessica Sanford for taking one for the team so my family can save $2,500/yr on our healthcare costs. I hope Obama highlights her inspiring story again in an upcoming speech. She is a true American.

                    • I wonder how many people are double dipping with state medicaid. Her son is covered by the State Medicaid program, but she counts him as her healthcare financial responsibility for the Feds. Either he gets coverage through the state, or she uses him to offset her federal insurance costs and covers him with Fed insurance, but she can't do both. And it is not possible for her to calculate it both ways, and then select the method that is cheapest for her.

The state and fed overlap is so complex that it is a wonder anyone enrolls properly. So everyone will double dip (knowingly or not) and wait for the Feds (or the State) to catch them. Once caught, they won't have any money for reimbursement, so what govt agency will want to pursue the double dipping? This is so fraught with risk.

Isn't the fine tax $95 or 1% of her income.

Good point. Let's see... Assuming there are still lots of bugs in the software then 1% of her "annual salary" before her deductions, etc. would be $41.66. If they get the bugs fixed then she might have to pay up to $500. So her options are to pay up to $500 in a tax and use the "free rider" healthcare at the emergency room or pay $7,452 to an insurance company and still pay out of pocket for most of her monthly health care costs. Given that she is a big Obama supporter and good American she will most likely go with the latter.

At the same time, a chat board on the website began filling up with messages:

                            “I can’t hear any audio?”

“Is everyone getting the ‘reconnecting’ message?”

“I did refresh twice — still no sound.”

                            “WHERES THE SOUND YO?”

One supporter pleaded, “Don’t tell me there are troubles with this live event like there were with the Obamacare website!!!!!”
                            http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2...hecaucus&_r=2&

Townhall.com is provider of political pornography. On the VirginiaCougar scale, it's probably the equivalent of a dog butthole fetish site.

But the testimony is the testimony, and the website issue isn't even close to being remedied, especially by November 30.
