Police say the intruder changed out of his wet clothes, found a tortilla and made himself a wrap, then went upstairs and demanded money from the home's residents.
I've never seen so much snow as I did last night about 9 pm. And then I think it rained most of the night. The article says he checked 20 houses to find a door that was unlocked. I can easily see how he'd want to stop and dry off and get a quick snack before continuing with the armed robbery.
The shooting may have been justified, but that doesn't mean it should be celebrated. The whole thing is tragic.
I celebrate that the home owner and his family are safe.
We will have to disagree to agree about what is or isn't tragic when something like this happens. If the result of this is that the homeowner has difficult time adjusting to life after using deadly force to protect himself and his family, I will call that tragic. That a criminal is dead as a result of his committing a crime won't cause me to lose sleep or fee badly for him.

Made himself a wrap out of a tortilla? That's a pretty sophisticated culinary creation for a drunk guy at 2 AM.
I wonder where the guy kept his gun -- with 3 kids in the house sounds like it was accessible pretty quickly.

It's tragic because the intruder wasn't even armed. He was stupid to threaten the man with a gun. If I had been in the same situation, I probably would have shot the intruder also, but I don't think I would have happy about it.

Agreed. Home invasions make me think of the Petit family and what an awful thing that was. I think he did the right thing.
Coincidentally, the shooting occurred just hours before the state Senate voted on House Bill 129. The bill states that a person is justified in defending home and family against criminal activity and may not be held liable for civil damages for injury or damage occurring while doing so.

The article mentions that the homeowner went into his closet to "get a coat" and emerged with the 9mm pistol. It could have been in a lock box or a safe.
