Depends on the state you live in. But contrary to your post, most gay couples would end up paying more taxes if they were married than if they were not. That is not a tax benefit.

So what are the significant legal benefits that were not available to gays prior to, say Judge Walker ruling Prop 8 unconstitutional in California? If there are any, I'd like to know.

Right. Because science yields such conclusive results on social issues.

So you're saying that they should have something separate, yet equal. That is an interesting idea. What should we name it?

I personally don't support civil unions. I don't see the need. So, no, I'm not saying that. But lets call it "equality under the law."

                      hmm

I honestly didn't know that. So what kind of legal option do you support for homosexuals that want to merge their lives together.

Help me out here. In a state like Utah, where civil unions and gay marriages are banned by the constitution. What is it you are looking for?

Well for a starter I would hope that eventually civil unions could get get a pass by the Utah State Constitution. Did you just say that you are against that option? If so, I am now really confused where you stand on the issue. I seem to recall that you have wondered why gay couples needed additional rights when they already had access to all the rights that marriage offers, but lacked only the right to use the socially accepted name of marriage. It seems to me that gays in Utah don't have access to these rights and you are happy that they are not granted access even in the form of a civil union.

I guess you are hoping it will drive the gays from your state into more accomidating states?

I don't want to put words into your mouth but that seems like a pretty harsh stand to me.

I think he's saying a gay dude already has all the rights of a straight person, he just needs to marry a chick.

Ahh well yes, of course that is a possible response, but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because that sort of response is bat-shit crazy.

My question is simple, and I've asked it several times. What significant legal benefits ("rights" as you say) are you looking for that a gay couple desiring to "merge their lives together" can't get in the state of Utah, for example.

I've been asked what I'd do to give them those legal benefits. I can't respond unless I know what benefits you are looking for.
