Well maybe this was the reason Komen cut ties:

In the wake of this week’s announcement that Susan G. Komen for the Cure will no longer be awarding grants to Planned Parenthood, the breast cancer organization’s donations have gone up 100 percent in the last two days."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I've never said that they are illegal. I've only inferred that they are morally repugnant.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostThese abortions are legal. I think your beef is with the Supreme Court and the US legislature. I do understand not being a fan of abortion though.
I used to be fairly apathetic toward abortion until I had two employees get abortions between undergrad and law school and talked with them about the experience. They didn't regret it, but they were definitely "changed" as a result. As a father and human being, I eventually came to view on-demand abortion as inhuman ("e" intentionally omitted), barbaric and disgusting. It's fairly difficult, from the unborn child's perspective, to think of it any other way.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

That's why it is stupid. As far as I am concerned why do people care that Komen decided to stop giving them money? They're entitled to give make donations to whomever they want for whatever reason they choose to. That there is political pressure either way is ridiculous.Originally posted by UtahDan View PostIt's what happens when an organization makes a decision based on political pressure. For some it's all about the money and protecting that money. It seems that the larger these NPOs get the more corporate they become.....the only problem is that being corporate is hard to do when your mission isn't to increase shareholder value.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThat's why it is stupid. I'm sure they won't care. They'll care a little more when my family and my wife's family back, which ends up being about 20 to 30 people per year who pay $25 each year, back out, but only a little more. Mostly, we'll sleep easier knowing that our money isn't going to the nation's largest provider of abortions.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostYour $25 will be sorely missed.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

I am not a fan of abortions. I just don't understand the angst directed at an organization which provides many medical, contraceptive, educational and counseling services. We all know that abortions are only one of the services that PP offers.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostI've never said that they are illegal. I understand angst directed at the Surpreme Court and the US legislature, but to direct your strong dislike toward an organization that is by and large a positve force in the communities that it serves, seems misplaced. PP isn't running pro-abortion ads admonishing the virtues of the early termination of pregnancies. They are offering a medically compotent and safe place for disadvantaged women to receive a legal abortion. Do you really want to go back to coat hangers?Dyslexics are teople poo...

PP is easily the most visible (and the most publicly funded) organization that advocates for abortion, isn't it? I suppose that's why it's the target of so much angst. I'm equally offended by the other independent local and regional abortion clinics.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI am not a fan of abortions. I wish a pro-life organization could find the huevos to hand out free condoms, provide STD testing and give no-cost breast examinations to the poor without also being tied to exterminating fetuses. Perhaps the difference between our positions is that you view an abortion as terminating a pregnancy and I view it as terminating a human life. Thus, in your mind (sorry for putting words in your mouth), all the good they do counterbalances, in whole or part, the ugliness of abortion. In my mind, rightly or wrongly, you can't really counterbalance a practice that is infinitely evil (not anyabortion, but the use of an abortion as a means of post-conception birth control). It's a pretty simplistic point of view, I'm willing to admit, but it's one based on an admiration and respect for human life. The tricky part is having to weigh one human life against another. Although it's not an easy decision, I am not wholly opposed to the standard LDS exceptions to the restriction on abortion.
Prior to solidifying my pro-life stance, I was afraid of returning to coat hanger abortions as well, so I'm sympathetic to that position. We've definitely got a wolf by the ears.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

What's extreme about taking a principled stand against funding an organization whose ideals you disagree with?
He's not telling people to bomb abortion clinics; he's not picketing abortion clinics, he's letting his contribution, even if small, go to an alternative organization that is consistent with his principles. It's a perfectly reasonable approach, and to infer otherwise is short-sighted and thoughtless.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

So you are basically saying that despite abortions being legal (though evil) you are upset that qualified organizations provide these medical procedures (or as you would put it, murders). You are entitiled to like, dislike or be ambivilant toward whatever organizations or groups of people that you wish. It just seems misplaced to me. Raging against PP or deciding to not donate to a charity that gives a small percentage to PP isn't going to stop abortions. Obviously only the Supreme Court or congress can do that. In fact, PP stops many abortions though its counseling and contraception services.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostPP is easily the most visible (and the most publicly funded) organization that advocates for abortion, isn't it? I would be interested to find out how many abortions PP helps to prevent through counseling pregnant women. I am not even sure how that statistic could be tracked, but PP isn't in the business of talking pregnant women onto having an abortion; however, it does provide a safe place for women to have an abortion once they have decided to do so.Dyslexics are teople poo...

Are you really stumped by the fact that a Mormon family find the protection and advocacy of abortion to be an ideal they don't want to support?Originally posted by Flystripper View PostWhat are PP's ideals?
Translation of the bolded: on-demand abortions. Do you disagree?Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual's income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual's right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships.
Based on these beliefs, and reflecting the diverse communities within which we operate, the mission of Planned Parenthood is
to provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual
to advocate public policies which guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services
to provide educational programs which enhance understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality
to promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care and encourage understanding of their inherent bioethical, behavioral, and social implicationsJesus wants me for a sunbeam.
