I don't think the hatred has grown, but I agree it's considerable.

I just don't think people in places like Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana would hold it against Jeb.

The Clinton impeachment + the 2000 election + the Iraq War has poisoned politics for the time being. W. got off to a rough start because of what happened in Florida.

The out of control budget deficit and fiscal helplessness/aimlessness should be the issue in 2012 just like it was in 2010 -- and it's equally as poisonous as the three items I listed above. But I think the Obama administration jedi mind-tricked (intentionally or unintentionally) the GOP primaries into focusing on the contraception health care provisions of Obamacare, thereby putting the focus in Santorum's wheelhouse.

So, 2016 is going to be less about Florida, hanging chads, and missing WMDs and more about the helplessness that people feel about this country's debt. Incredibly enough considering what W. did in office, the Democrats won't have any credibility in this area.

Romney and the GOP should be focusing on Obama and his fiscal fecklessness right now. I still can't figure out WTF happened a couple weeks ago in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado. I guess part of it is Romney just not making any kind of positive case for himself.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I wonder if this will help humanize Romney a bit....it sure can't hurt.

This is what I just don't understand. Why would we want the normal run of the mill guy to run the country? I don't want the common man to run the show. Normal guys dont excel, they are normal or mediocre for a reason. I want someone that has shown the ability to not be like everyone else, and has a proven track record of success. Its better if he isnt like us common folk. We want better results.

          Why can't voters grasp that?

And I dont want a lifetime politician that has sucked from the teat of the country his whole life either.

I think with Romney there is the concern that he is not self made. I think voters like the American Dream concept and Romney is not exactly that as he came from extremely blessed circumstances. That is not to say that people don't see him as capable, just that he had a head start on everyone else. While I think this is a deep sentiment within American political culture, it is currently on real high alert because of Bush II. Further, the current President believes that government should use its power to remedy the patently unfair head start that Romney had because he was raised in a wealthy environment. In how Romney will be charactrized it will play into Obama's message. Now I don't think there is widespread acceptance of class warfare but that is what the big President believes.

Politics is a great deal about having the God given charisma to get people to like you, that isn't Romney's biggest strength.

Not to be to much of a smart ass, but the problem with anyone is that they would still be a Republican. For as much as people feel like Republicans are somehow missing an opportunity here, I think the reality is that the party has a hard time fielding a candidate who is not either (1) too far right for a general election or (2) a moderate who is going to be able to sufficiently distinguish himself from Obama without alienating the center. I may be wrong, but my belief is that the center is pretty socially liberal and that it will be really easy to turn them off with the wrong position on one of those issues, economy or no.

              • OOC, how much would y'all be willing to spend to go to a fundraiser dinner for Romney? A good friend of mine just came up and asked me to join a dinner he's putting on for Mitt, but the price is a little, well, steep for where I'm at in life.

Probably your standard mass-produced filet from a 4-star hotel, an oversalted and overcook vegetable, very rich mashed potatoes, and your choice of iced tea or water. Very highly likely that the dessert will be creme brulee that was made somewhere offsite.

dont forget chilled balls of butter for your choice of white or wheat roll and a nondescript dinner salad topped with creamy vinaigrette.

                          • Looks like Mitt hasn't screwed up the momentum from last night. I fully expected him to say something stupid this morning, but maybe they kept him off the talk shows for that very reason. It seems that every time he gets a head of steam he steps in a mess. Hoepfully he's learned his lesson after doing it twice already.

All of the pundits this morning (four news channels were on at once in the gym) were bashing Santorum for three or four things he said last night or for things that Romney pointed out. Last night was a good night for Romney.

I saw Juan Williams this morning and he was less than impressed with Romney and didn't think Santorum hurt himself.
